Did HBO guarantee the fighter's purses? NO. HBO isn't the one who's assuming the risk here. The Promoters are - because they are the ones who put up the money to stage the event. If this fight only does 10k PPV buys - guess what - HBO probably still makes money...
You're a good poster, I like you, so don't take anything I say in a disrespectful tone, just in case I like Golovkin, I really do. I'm even considering buying his PPV. But let's call it what it is. That's what all the "he's not a PPV fighter" or "people forgot him" **** is. Ward isn't worth it to them, but he's willing to fight other 154 lbs fighters for little money. Now let me clarify because I like Golovkin, he has absolutely no obligation to face Ward. He was entertaining Froch and Chavez Jr because their reward is worth the risk. He would only agree to fight Ward with 50/50 at 164 lbs because that reduces the risk and makes it worth more. If this fight doesn't materialize, I won't call either man scared or a duck, they just couldn't come to terms. I completely understand the circumstances. You can dress it up all you want because, frankly, I think you're a Golovkin die hard, but it is what it is. Risk vs reward. :good
Doesn't matter, don't get hung up on technicalities, fact is if he wasn't a draw he wouldn't even be considered for a PPV in the first place.
He's set tix records at Stubhub, Forum, MSG. He sells on both coasts (rare). He's recieving mainstream attention and publicity from shows like ESPN Sportsnation, First Take, Max and Marcellus, Sports Illustrated Live, etc. He will now be debuting his first PPV. His is a big draw and will only be getting bigger. Do you realize what will happen once he beats Canelo by KO? It's going to send him to crossover s****om... Whether you like it or not. Ward is going to become Z side at that point.
Well right there you hit on it. Ward wants far more money than Lemieux to fight at 168. To get DL into the ring required PPV, though one with reasonable sales expectations. To get Ward would require PPV with much higher sales expectations, though going by ticket sales (which is whats used as gauge) Lemieux is as good of a B side as Ward if not better. You Ward fans should stop resenting GGG just because Ward threw his career into the gutter. Golovkin had nothing to do with that, other than putting in the hard work fighting as often as possible for relatively little money compared to Ward for the sake of building his brand. Expecting Ward get a massive payday and play A-side when he has done zilch in years is ridiculous. When Ward was the known commodity in the US, K2 OKed the bout on Wards terms. Ward did not bite, had no interest. Went on record with Ring as having no interest. Now Ward needs headlines so he talks a lot about GGG and , as you yourself pointed out massively overprices himself.
Truth be told - he WASN'T considered for a PPV "in the first place". The ONLY reason why this fight is on PPV is because HBO didn't have enough money in their budget to buy this fight and put it on WCB - where it belongs. The FACT is, we don't know if Bumlovkin is a draw or not because he hasn't yet sold a SINGLE PPV.
I won't, and same for you. 😏👍🏻 Golovkin is my favorite fighter for sure, but that doesn't mean I only say things about it that'll be good. I just tell it as it is. Example: he'd lose to Andre Ward. For me, Golovkin isn't afraid of Ward nor does he want to duck him. If Ward was a huge draw at 168 right now, fighting in huge stadiums, selling out crowds, and possibly PPV... Geez, Golovkin would probably would have fought him already. If that's risk vs reward to you, that's cool. I just don't see things from GGG that say "too risky". Because once Golovkin does finish his business at 160, he'll then fight Ward at 168 whether Ward is a draw or not.
Yes but they think this PPV will be succesful, that's why it's on. They're not putting Golovkin on a PPV to operate on a loss, whether that be his promoter or HBO or whatever.
