Good post, mate. I agree, I think he should fight Ward at 168 down the line (if he is planning to move up) but not as his first real step up.
At 160? GGG, should do that. It would still be more interesting if he actually goes up and fights the Russian or Stevenson.
It's just incredible the vitriol Ward gets in this forum. Out of all these guys being mentioned, he's the only one that has a very credible resume. These other guys aren't spring chickens, they're almost all in their 30's aside from Kovalev, have been fighting for several years and haven't beaten anyone of note. I'm more disappointed with GGG not challenging himself against a fight with Ward now. He has a longer amateur career than Ward, is OLDER than Ward, can't get the "big name" fights at 160, so instead of trying his luck against the # 2 P4P guy, he decides to continue lobbying at 160 against tomato cans. When your biggest wins are against a blown up JMW in Rosado and Matthew Macklin, you shouldn't be considered a "boogeyman" by any stretch of the imagination. he's an action pack fighter with a very pathetic resume up to this point. It's kind of sad, he's already in his 30's and he continues to take on these nobodies.
Kovalev is going on 31. As far as Golovkin, he's making good money and a good name for himself against the guys they're matching him up against. There's no need for him to move up and risk taking a loss right now.
That's exactly how I see it. Ward won't move down for free, though- GGG will have to take that fight in Oakland if Andre's going to spot him the weight. And that would be a reasonable request even if I'd rather see the fight in Vegas. Moving up to 168 to fight Ward in his hometown is a foolish business decision because it's giving all the leverage to Andre, and even the people who are claiming GGG's ducking Ward know it.
If Golovkin moved up to 168 to fight Ward, Ward's side would not insist that the fight be in Oakland. They would make a ton from HBO and you could sell tickets to that fight in a lot of places. The bottom line is, Golovkin's team has no interest in going to 168 and fighting Ward in any location. I don't blame them either. It's no good move at this point.
No. Once his competition and, more importantly, his paydays step up then his frequency of fighting will go down. They'll probably feed him more bums in 2014 in hopes of building up the Ward fight. Andre retires Gennady in 2015...
