I decide to take some time to look at both fighter´s punch stats. Have to admit, I was a bit surprised. According to compuBox stats Ward has been hit almost 70% more than Golovkin compared their last 7 fights. In average, Golovkin takes approximately 62 punches per fight vs. 105 punches taken by Ward. I tried to look back to see how many fights it took for Golovkin to take that many punches overall, but unfortunately last fight that had stats available was Proksa, 12th fight. At that point, he had taken exactly 700 punches (Ward took 732 punches in his 7 fights). To get even in overall, those 32 punches came probably against Fuchigami (13th fight) or against Simon (14th fight). But that is just a guess. Simon didn´t connect anything before he was knockout and Fuchigami was knockout in 3rd. Basically, Golovkin had to fight 14 fights to get hit as many times as Ward. It must be recognize that Golovkin has taken a bit more punches in the same time frame. Golovkin fought 16 times (add Ouma TKO10 and Tapia KO3 on the list) compared to Ward 7 fights since November 2010. Strong guess is that Ward as a pro, has taken at least two times more punches than Golovkin. Do you think it will make a difference in a long run?
crazy then how lowercase gee was deathly afraid of a guy he gets hit less than....especially one thats featherfisted like ward makes u wonder what lowercase gee was so afraid of .......but i guess all is not lost...i mean...lowercase gee is now stepping up to take on an unbeaten welterweight....so i guess that duck of ward is justified now
I'd guess in their respective last 7 fights Ward has had at least twice as many rounds as Golovkin. So, while your point about damage accumulation might stand, I'm not sure this demonstrates much about their defensive abilities.
I think so too. Ward is defensive minded fighter and logically speaking, it should show in stats (and it shows). My intentions was not to showcase something that Compubox stats already shows and what is public knowledge (Ward and Golovkin have great defense).
I was asking about your thoughts on how does it affect in a long run, if you take so much more hits in a fight? I wasn´t stating who has the better defense. How come everything you write here is regarded as statement against or for GGG or Ward? If I had to, I could argue GGG style (if you master it to perfection) is more economical in a long run since guys "who don´t get hit" get hit as much as aggressors. For example, Golovkin has taken over 100 punch in only one fight, that been vs. Murray (131). In those seven fights, Ward got hit over 100 times in four different occasion; Bika (146), Abraham (158 , Froch (156) and Barrera (111).
