Old Calzaghe beat Hopkins and IMO wouldn't have the problems with Ward's speed and movement that Kessler and Froch had. If they had a ref who broke up clinches, Joe would have a very good shot at winning this. Joe's work rate, hand speed, and movement would give any fighter trouble.

Even so, Ward may soon have a better resume than Joe and will definitely surpass him in the next few years. If Ward keeps fighting the best he could be something really special.

 

Me either,he is going well but he aint convinced me yet.Froch and Kess both fell victim to his style,they could not cope with that type of fight.Froch already knew it would be hard as **** because he found Dirrel a nightmare.Lets see how Ward goes against somebody like Dirrel.As for Joe,he would have found a way to beat Ward.

 

Steve Collins retired rather than face Joe, leading to the Eubanks fight.

Sven Ottke was too happy to keep taking homecooked decisions to fight Joe.

Eubanks was still viable when Joe beat him. Reid was at his peak when they fought. He KO's twice the supposedly rugged Mario Veit (who was undefeated when they first met). Everyone knows about Lacy and Kessler.
And let me throw a reality check out there that Calzaghe did a damn sight better against Sakio Bika than Ward did, the homecooked scorecards be damned.


I agree, Ward has the potential to have a better career than Calzaghe, but stop acting like Calzaghe wasn't something special. His Hopkins win now looks Herculean to have outpointed Bernard in the US after starting so poor in the first round. I seriously doubt Ward right now would beat Hopkins, and I almost felt like THAT was the reason Hopkins was ringside for the Froch fight. I half expected him to jump into the ring and challenge Ward to a catchweight fight.

I agree with this thread in many ways, though I would add that Calzaghe was the real deal. He was a great fighter and would have given Ward a damn good fight.

All of that said, Ward is the future pound for pound top dog in our sport once Floyd moves on. Ward has accomplished a tremendous amount at 168lbs already (thanks AGAIN, Showtime, for giving us this tournament) and will indeed go on to be the best 168lber of all time if he stays at the weight. He has absolutely the complete package and knows when to use all of the tools in his toolbox.

Wards best win is Kessler who Calzaghe had already beaten.
Ward doesnt have any SMW wins as good as Calzaghe had with wins over Kessler, Eubank, Mitchell, Reid and Lacy, and yes that is correct.

Kessler had been truly exposed by Calzaghe giving a bluprint on how to beat him and was an unwell double vision suffering fighter

Froch in his world title fights was 5-1, beat Pascal who had done nothing at SMW and wasnt even a top 10 SMW, and was behind in his only win by KO over Taylor (who was 1-2 in his last 3 fights and done little at SMW) at world title level when scoring a late KO, had a SD over Dirrell whos best win was Oganov and had done nothing at SMW, LOST to Kessler coming off a loss, beat Abraham coming off a loss who had done little at SMW and beat Johnson by MD, who had done little at SMW and whos best win at SMW was beating A Green coming off a loss.

That isnt better than what Mitchell, Lacy or Reid achieved and similar to that of Woodhall when weighed up.

Ward has a long way to go to equal Calzaghe and didnt want to answer about Bute who has looked far better against commen opposition.

I dont think Ward would beat beat Bute. If he does fair play, but it would still leave him short of the #1 SMW ever.

 

Calzaghe would have been a prime Toney. Jones, that's a toss up. They, at their best, were fast technicians. Let's not forget that Jones was accused of much the same kind of dodging at SMW that Calzaghe was, though I really don't think either should have been. Hey, that mailman Jones fought was a tough fighter nonetheless.

The list of fighters your forced to resort mentioning in Calzaghe's defense points out how truly devoid of notable wins Calzaghe's SMW resume is. Do you think Ward would shy away from facing ATG fighters like Mitchell and Reid? Give me a break.

 

I think Calzaghe would win this one.

 

Ward is nothing special to me. He cannot KO opponents and fights only in his backyard. He is good at going the distance and keeping it without clean punches. Nothing exciting about his style. It is bad for boxing that he won. He was the most colorless and boring fighter in S6.

I havent said Ward would be worried of facing anyone though he hasnt exactly proven that he is willing to travel to fight anyone either.
Still I noted how those fighters were more accomplished than the version of Kessler Ward beat and Froch who has only had one clear win in all of his 6 world title fights.

If you think Calzaghes resume is void, Wards must look alot worse as his big win is Kessler who Calzaghe beat when undefeated
