Ward is making 5 million, Sergey 2 million.

There's no good reason for Ward to make more than the champion.

 

The fact that they were willing to pay him more is a pretty good reason imo.

 

Just goes to show what Kovalev had to agree to make the fight happen. Ward has barely any fans and Kov agrees to fight for peanuts to make the fight happen. Kovalev is great for the fans we need more great fighters like him that don't care for the money. He could of easily demanded more than ward.

 

No I can imagine the conversation would have went something along these lines.

Ward's agent: Hello Mr Kovalev, Andre Ward is serious about fighting you in 2016.

Kovalev: Anytime, any place

Agent - Ok, well firstly these are the clauses that we would like written in the contract - The fight must take place on US soil

Kovalev - No problem

Agent - Ward must come to the ring first and we get to select who officiates the fight

Kovalev - Ok that is all good for me

Agent - However you will have to wait months until Ward feels that he is ready as he states that he needs at the very least 3 tune ups. Will that be a problem?

Kovalev - It is no problem for me

Agent - If you lose any of the fights while Ward is taking his tune-ups the deal no longer stands up due to your market value decreasing.

Kovalev - I will not lose fight.

Agent - Ok, but you are only going to get a fraction of the earnings from the event, so Ward will get 70% while you will get only 30% Are you sure you are ok with all those terms?

Kovalev - Please, just make fight happen as soon as possible,

Agent - Errr....ok....welll....I will need to get back in touch with Mr Ward and let you know how things develop. *Agent puts receiver down*

The fight was made what's all the bitching about? None of you are going to see a dime of that money. In fact a lot of you are paying them. Besides, Ward is the A side but as a fan that shouldn't matter, just the fight.

 

I think when arguments start to centre round purse percentages, every other possible topic of disagreement has been exhausted. Although has anyone done choice of gloves yet?
