I just rewatched the fight. Ward comes in with his head first from round 2 -11. He headbutts Kessler 4 times as i se it. And he holds while hitting the entire fight. Dont run away from Ward being very, very dirty. He should have been warned on at least three occasions where the ref sees the headbutts. I mean - Ward was the better man, faster and with better movement but he was extremely dirty and won the fight because of the head butts which caused Kesslers cuts. I cant see one situation where Ward hits Kessler clean and causes a cut. If it wasnt for these headbutts the fight could have been very different. Kessler complains after round 5 that he cant see. Just after one of the head butts. Even the American commentators reffered to Ward as Billy the goat. :deal
I just got done watching the fight for the first time. I can't say the head butts were intentional, but Ward clinches routinely as part of his defense, and doing so comes in with his head low. In the future the referees need to give him proper warnings for all the clinching he does. I noticed that during the Miranda fight as well, he's like a combination of Roy Jones and John Ruiz, maybe with a tad bit of Holyfield and Hopkins to boot with the use of his head and the effective hitting during the clinch. If you can reduce the clinching Ward uses, and if Kessler would learn to shorten his punches and fight on the inside, the rematch would make for a lot tighter fight. That said, I'm sure Taylor and DiBella are already looking at their chances of beating Ward. Ward has great skill, but I think he might be compensating for his chin with all his clinching.
Kessler is an embarrassment...regardless of Wards UNINTENTIONAL FOULS, you cant tell me in your right mind that Kessler would have won that fight. You say Ward was the better man, yet you say the fight would have been very different if there werent any headbutts. SMH
It's impressive to see a young fighter employing the kind of cagey veteran tactics that Hopkins does. Hopkins fought a very similar match against Pavlik, and it was wonderful to watch. People applauded him. I'm just glad that one of the two Andres, as talented as they both are, demonstrated that he has some true grit inside. I'm hoping Dirrell will pull it together, because if he does, 168-175 is going to be amazing for a while.
Agreed. They are both very good. And Ward is doing the cagey veteran things almost better than Hopkins. Its that good.
Ward was clinching excessively and was allowed to do so by the home town ref....but Kessler couldnt fight for **** on the inside.
Are all Euro's stupid enough to belive that you are not supposed to hit until the ref instructs you to stop hitting and break? This is a joke.
deal:deal Kessler's one of my favorite fighters but Ward schooled him. Everyone should stop looking for excuses and just accept the fact that Kessler got beaten, and beaten badly.
None of that **** was unintentional. Rewatch it to see for yourself. Ward was the better man. But when Kessler gets hit by one of the big headbutts in round 5 and says he cant see - thats when the fight almost stopped. Dont give me that ****. Kessler could have been alot better. Dont ignore the obvious. Btw - it isnt unintentional to walk in with the head first the entire fight. Thats tactics. And Ward is damn good at it. Its one of his qualities.
I have yet to have it explained to me why Kessler could not see after the 5th when he did not get the first cut above his eye until the 8th. Perhaps because Ward kept hitting him in the eye with the jab and straight right? Or did Ward just headbutt him so hard that he went temporarily blind?
