If it wasn't for the headbutts, we would just look at a CLEVER decision win for Ward based on Kessler being too soft, and not being able to adjust. Ward did NO damage at all with his hands, just outfoxed Kessler to win the majority of rounds when Kessler just couldn't find him. That is a clear UD for Ward, but not some "utter domination" or "annihilation". Last time I checked, doing damage "accidentally" with your head only does not translate into rightfully "destroying" your opponent. You can count the number of clean powerpunches Ward landed flush with your fingers. The majority of punches were simple speedy amateur scorers, legal and valid, but nothing that meant "domination" or "pounding". The main body of work Ward did excellent in was his defense. BTW, Ward looked 24 in the fight, Kessler like 45.
K-man, im not exactly to sure about what fight you were watching, wards punches sent kessler reeling back numerous times, so to say he wasn't getting hurt simply because he wasn't knocked down or knocked out, lets me know your in a state of denial. if the headbutts didn't happen, the results wouldve remained the same: kessler getting his ears boxed off for 12 rounds. and he didn't fight like he was old, its just his predictable, limited approach proved ineffective against a fast, elusive boxer such as ward. he'll look like his old self when he fights froch, since froch cant box his way out of a paper bag. then you can make excuses about that version of kessler didn't show up on the ward fight:deal
Why can't people accept both things? That Ward was better but he's also dirty? :huh I hate headbutters, it's the worse kind of foul.
I agree with K-man on this one. Try to take a look at Kessler's face after the fight. Then try to correlate the damages with Ward's punches. It doesn't match up does it! Now try to look at Kesslers bad cuts and correlate them with Ward's headbutts. Get the drift???
its funny after something happens after ONE fight and people go along with it as if they've been doing it their entire career. ward isn't a dirty fighter, his headbutts derive from his somewhat awkward switch hitting style and how he comes forward. it wasn't intentional, he's still a little inexperienced and still needs to work some kinks out. kessler just isn't as good as everybody says he was and ward pretty much showed that.
Too that i agree, the cuts on Kesslers face is most likely all caused by the headbutts, intentional or not.
holger, i hope your not implying that kessler wouldve won or the fight wouldve been more competitive if it weren't for the headbutts are you?? are you saying that the hundreds of punches ward landed on kesslers face played absolutely NO part in causing some swelling or any type of damage what so ever??
I know that. I always believed he was overrated and Ward had a huge chance here. This was Ward's most important fight, so that might have something to do with it. Some of those headbutts looked intentional, I mean plain and simple. I have favorite fighters too, but you gotta call it how you saw it. Holyfield loved to headbutt too. They both can go on and on about God but it doesn't make them saints. Just saying. Maybe he'll sort it out though. So I won't classify him as dirty yet. Just had a dirty fight.
well the difference between ward and holyfield, is that holyfield has a history of headbutting many fighters. ward is still young and doesn't have alot of fights under his belt, this is the only fight where he head-butted someone. people are saying as if he's been doing this his entire career and has a history of doing it:rofl. i just find it funny how a persons opinion about a fighter can change so rapidly after one fight.
You are right about that and yeah, got to wait and see. Maybe he just has a bad habit of leading with his head sometimes?. It's possible. But ok, look, it goes both ways, lets say he DOES have that habit. If it's a habit why did it only show here in this fight? his most important fight? Doesn't seem logical. But again you are right about him not being known as a headbutter. And we have to wait.
