Muhammad Ali's "first true test" was against Sonny Liston.

Ali is the GOAT and a true once in a lifetime fighter. Once again horrible comparison.:patsch Who was Kessler's first true test? Ah Calzaghe and he was beaten soundly.:hi:

Ward employs the clinch entirely too much. I don't appreciate that in any of my fighters. That is only acceptable / respectable when the clinching party is hurt, otherwise it warrants a point deduction especially if it appears to be part of the fighters initial game plan.

    Miguel Cotto speaks on clinching/holding @ 06:18

I don't necessarily agree with Cotto but I do appreciate his perspective.

Yeah, but Calzaghe passed. Miranda is not the same caliber as Kessler. Calzaghe would have knocked him out and so should have Ward.

Effective clinching would have won Cotto the fight against Margo.:deal If he fails to clinch he will lose again down the road especially with his shaky chin and average defense. He needs to realize that it's part of boxing and should employ it screw the macho act.

Actually, I beg to differ. Cotto actually demonstrated competent defense and a grizzled beard in the Margarito affair alone. He just couldn't get the ****** off his back and had no time to rest. Now I do agree that Cotto should have clinched at times. As I said earlier, it is acceptable for a fighter to clinch when hurt but unacceptable if it is part of his general gameplan.

He should have clinched so he could have broken up Margo's rhythm. We all saw how effective clinching was done right by Mosley against Margo. He never allowed Margo to get into a rhythm of any sort in their fight. Cotto should have done the same tactic and without a doubt would have beaten Margo. Cotto isn't Pea Whitaker or PBF with defense so he will need to be smart and crafty like Shane was and employ effective clinching if he wants to continue to win against the elite.

If Cotto had Mosley's speed and skills he might have.

Even Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson clinched. I understand boxing purists having a problem with it - but the truth is that it's the discretion of the fighters and the referee as to how much clinching is allowed. If the ref doesn't stop it - then it's part of the sport. Protect yourself at all times. Good fighters know how to deal with it anyway. Julio Cesar Chavez knew how to throw his arms out to prevent a clinch so he could keep battering the **** out of his opponent.

Ward fought the smart fight against a puncher of Miranda's calibre - whom many picked to KO Ward.

That's disingenuous. Kessler's first "test" if you wanna call it that was against Anthony Mundine. You could even argue his first test was Henry Porras.

It's a little disingenuous to pick the fight he lost and call it his first "true test".
