There has been a lot of talk on how Andre Ward is a boring fighter and not marketable at all, namely by MaxBoxing's Steve Kim who went on a tirade following his lopsided points win over Arthur Abraham in Saturday night's Super Six semi-final bout.

Here is a piece I penned on why I think Ward needs Carl Froch to beat Glen Johnson to help setup the next part of his career and why I think he is a marketable fighter that the boxing public should champion, despite his fighting style being less than thrilling.

Give it a read and I would appreciate any feedback. Bit of a long one but I have many points I wanted to make.

Ward needs Froch win to legitimize self, Super Six
    Mark Ortega

When Showtime first conceived the Super Six World Boxing Classic, the intent was not only to crown more than just one standout fighter, but ultimately, to build the tournament champion into a crossover star that the network could champion in the coming years.

With former Olympic gold medalist and defending WBA champion Andre Ward’s lopsided victory over former middleweight kingpin Arthur Abraham now in the books, and the latter portion of the final to be decided on June 4th between WBC champion Carl Froch, and 2005 “Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year” Glen Johnson, it is high time to evaluate the progression thus far and speculate on what lies ahead.

That the Super Six has seen a number of peaks and troughs comes as no surprise; the inaugural run was bound to encounter its fair share of hiccups, not unlike any first-generation innovation. Among its highs, however, have been a couple of high-profile bouts in a division that, until recently, has seen few in its brief history.
Mikkel Kessler's razor-thin victory over Carl Froch amounted to the most exciting of the bunch. The bout looked and felt more like a club fight than a technical one, as the two fought it out in the center of the ring, much to the fans’ delight. As well, the round robin can boast a number of well-promoted events spanning the globe; Berlin, Nottingham, and Oakland have all seen capacity crowds in attendance, in addition to a couple of shock results (in the cases of Ward's one-sided win over Kessler for the WBA title, and Andre Dirrell's dissection of an undefeated Abraham). As the competition unfolds, however, one thing is clear: Oakland’s Andre Ward is riding a lightning-fast trajectory to boxing stardom

Ward needs to fight & beat a world class opponent in a "neutral" venue

He has talent but the deck is always stacked in his direction

Froch is going to be the Super Six winner. Ward, good as he is, will have huge problems if Froch fights like he did against Abraham (from the outside, high punch output, lots of pop).
Some will say Ward is to slick or to technically versatile, but I doubt that he will win.

well, you're in luck then, because the oddsmakers are likely to make Ward a 2/1 or 3/1 favorite. Could be a windfall for you.

I think Ward vs Froch will be something the fans needs ..But we already know he is in line for the winner of the Froch /Johnson fight ..So he's already legitimized himself this will be icing on the cake !

Good article Mark. I agree a showdown with ward and foch would be the best conclusion of the tournament. Im leaning with ward, but I have a feeling it won't be as exciting as others think it could be. If abraham vs froch wasn't fight of the year then I doubt this will come close. I for one thought froch vs abraham would be a back and fourth bombs away battle. Kind of sucks froch decided to box him.

Super 6 has been a dissapointment in my opinion. The tourney has taken too long, fighters pulling out,the fighters refusing to engage and generally the entertainment level has been poor.It appears all you have to do is get a fight at home and you win.**** poor indeed.:deal

Beats Froch and goes on to beat Bute, then he will have completely cleaned out the division.

Think same applies for Froch aswell, he needs to beat Ward and maybe Bute before he can make claims aswell.

Froch is getting robbed vs Ward. The fight will be in the US, Showtime are hanging off Ward's bollocks and the US wants a star.

Froch literally will have to KO him and Ward is slippery. Only a fool would think Froch wins this fight.

Super Six lost its legitimacy the day they allowed Ward to have all of his fights in the US, its a joke that he didnt have a fight in Europe.

There have been several fights in the US during the super six and none of them have been robberies, but there was one fight in Nottingham and it was a robbery. So your accusation is strange.

Anyway, I like Froch to win on points. He has the length on the outside and the grit on the inside to counteract Wards' style.

Froch was always wary of Abrahams power, thats why he boxed him at distance and didn't get into a brawl.Although i think he'll box clever against Ward (assuming he gets past Johnson) i don't believe Wards power will concern him,and at some point in the fight Froch will open his shoulders and throw some bombs.Ward has a great defence, but always looks open for a well placed uppercut,Kessler sent a few whistling past Wards chin in there fight,it would be interesting to see how he reacts if a decent puncher connects with that shot.

Andre responded harshly to the article via Twitter, mainly to the title, I am sure.

I've been behind Ward from the gate and feel that if Ward beats Froch in the finals, the naysayers and doubters who have followed him will have no ammunition against him. If he beats Glen Johnson in the finals, it opens up the floodgates. People will point to him beating 3 guys not originally part of the Super Six in order to claim the trophy. If he beats Froch, how is that not better for his career? Or for the Super Six?
