Says he feels the WBC wrongly stripped him of the real title (which they did). Boxing fans, applaud!:happy
i agree with ward. its not like hes been inactive for over a year. wbc just do whatever they want to do chavez jr is the perfect example
So he technically doesn't have a legitimate recognized major org world title now. The real WBA 168lb title with lineage going back to the birth of the division is actually the one Kessler has - the "regular" title. Ward's piece is the "Super World" title, which is a superfluous bauble cooked up during Ottke's reign only 10 years ago. He may as well relinquish that as well, and fight 10-rounders from here out.
belts don't mean **** these days, and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to see that Ward is currently the #1 SMW in the world, with or without belts
I dunno about that. Ward defeated Kessler for the regular WBA title and was then upgraded to the super champion. I don't think the regular belt has a clear or real lineage at this point and my general thought is to treat any super champion as the actual champion for that organization. Just like Sturm was the real WBA middleweight champion, not N'Jikam or Golovkin for all of those years. This isn't meant as a defense of the WBA's nonsense or anything like that mind you.
Let's be honest here, he hardly fights, He wins the Super Six, and it is time to shine and make the big fights making big money. What the **** does he do? Slows down, his last fight was close 8 almost 9 months ago and not a single announcement of potential next bout. Truth be told, I agree with IB he might as well fight 10 rounders on under cards as being a Champ Main Event High paying super star is not for him. (By his actions, which speak louder than words)
How does one become linear champ? I know you have to beat the man who beat the man, but how do you determine "the man"? Is it the fighter who's the clear #1 in the division? Is it the one who unifies all the belts?
Who cares about belts anymore?? Everyone knowsn who the best in the division is. When Hatton and Pacquiao fought at 140, they fought for some micky Mouse IBO belt. Seriously belts mean nothing in this day and age. Wards still the man at 168
Yes, but technically not for a traditionally accepted world title. He didn't vie for one until two years later against Froch and then Dawson for the very green belt he just gave up his claim to. Against Green/Bika/Abraham/Froch/Dawson it was that newly contrived "Super World' title on the line, defended after lifting it off Kessler. You can argue that only twice has he fought "real" world title bouts, even though for all intents and purposes he cleaned out the division and beat all the big names. The "real" WBA title during that period was in play in a game of hot-potato between much lesser talents such as Sartison, Magee, Balzsay, and Kashtanov before ending up in Kessler's possession as it was back in 2009, last defended against Perdomo before he was elevated to "Super World" status and promptly defeated by Ward. :deal
