He was a world rated heavyweight amateur 10 years ago, and he chooses to fight in a lighter division as a pro because he can still dry out enough.

Afraid? I said easier. Ward was beating the best light heavyweights in the world as an amateur in 2002. Today, he's 200 pounds and says he couldn't even make light heavyweight if he tried.

He has been AT MINIMUM a light heavyweight for the last 20 years when he started competing there as an amateur (now he couldn't even get that low).

But it was easier beating middles and super middles as a pro, and he was able to dry out enough and rehydrate quickly enough as pro, so he did that for as long as he could. Now, he admits, he couldn't even dry out to 175.

As far as Beterbiev goes, he was already at heavyweight. He already fought 200 pounders. It's easier to fight 175 pounders, and he can drain himself down and rehydrate back up, so he does.

Some guys want to test themselves against the biggest and the best, others do not.

Some choose to fight Tyson Fury for the World title. Some are happy mixing it up with the Menlong Fangs of the world. Some are weight bullies, some are not.

Beterbiev and Ward fall into the weight bully category.

 

Talking about Beterbiev here, not Ward. If he can make 175 safely, what's the issue? So he's doing the same thing EVERYONE has done for the past 30 years, fight at a weight where they are at their best.

Lets be clear , anybody can cease making weight , add on bulk and move up the weights. Beterbiev can easily move up to HW where he will lose. Ward could have easily have moved up to HW , again he would lose.

Beterbiev is suited to 175. He doesn't dry out. He makes weight and has no problem doing so. There's no bullying involved when he's fighting guys the same size as he is

No, if HW limit had been at minimum 200 lbs in prime shape Ward or Beterbiev not likely were able to make this minimum 200 lbs.
While yeah, boxers like Gvozdyk and Beterbiev are huge blokes for LHW, they are not even average size blokes by CW standard ( CW cuts lesser % than any!!!!! pro boxing weight class because HW in US pays considerably more than CW and money matters a lot ).
