After the Super Six instead of doing what everyone expected and fighting Bute he took a 9 month holiday and told Bute he needed to fight someone decent first like Froch which he did and then Ward was shocked Bute chose to fight Froch instead of him lol.

He then spent most of the next couple of years involved in lawsuits with his promoter Goosen and talking about a fight with either Froch or GGG which of course never happened. He also had a few injury issues that along with his promotional issues saw him only fight twice in a 2 year period.

He briefly dabbled with the idea of light heavy but instead drained Dawson down to 168lbs. Ward could of fought Dawson at 175lbs but Ward has always been pretty risk adverse and his own worst enemy when it came to his career. He could of left a far greater legacy had he wanted to but he never had the mentality to push himself, everything with him was over calculated to the point he would self sabotage himself.

Yeah, Ward was clearly big at SMW, I believe Froch was surprised how strong his was. Froch was a light cutter. Ward would struggle to wrestle guys his natural size or bigger, would make him far less effective.
For people comparing him to Golovkin, Golovkin fought at MW in the ams. He didn't cut down to get a size advantage in the pros.

To be fair, Ward could have fought other LHW champs after Kovalev, but had bigger fish to fry, like fighting AJ and walking around with his backpack getting interviewed by internet boxing channels. In the end, it was just the backpack thing.

Truth is that Ward pounced on Kovalev when there were signs he was beatable. It wasn't as obvious as with Canelo, but it was there, similar to when people sensed Golovkin was getting sluggish and started getting vocal about the fight (BJS and others). People ignore this now, but there was that fight in Russia where Kov didn't look so good and seemed unfit. Ward probably thought he could smother the power and wear him down, and he was right in theory, despite still losing the first fight. Also in the second fight Ward had intel from Snake Jackson, who was speaking to Dre on the phone (as you do), so he knew Kov was not properly focused.

This was not the Kov that destroyed Cleverly and others.

Anyway, Ward showed that he was targeting weakened goods and was fearful of Beterbiev and others because he quickly exited. If Ward truly loved to beat up these 'punchers', which is a common theme with him, jealousy of guys with more power, then he would have gone and 'schooled' Beterbiev, another big scalp and another perceived foreign cauc 'taking bread off his table' in Murica. He could have been undisputed at LHW and had more legacy claims etc. He took his ball and went home.
