Even though he's boring as hell I got to give my respect to Ward right now. If he signs a fight with Kovalev..... nuts of steel.
Good move. He now needs to beat Hopkins, Bute, Pascal, Stevenson, Kovalev and Beterbiev and be crowned TBE. Floyd is crying in his basement reading this news, someone give him a mineral iv quick
Ward's resume would untouchable in this era if he beat those guys. Ward HAS to face a big name from the get-go. Pascal is ideal. Pascal, Hopkins, Stevenson, Kov, Beter. That's the way to go, IMO.
Nothing wrong with fighting Yuniesky Gonzalez instead of Pascal. Some did give that fight to Gonzalez. Would be a ****ing phenomenal fight too. Gonzalez/Ward would bring out a lot from Ward, I'd wager. Eleider Alvarez would also be a good one. Hell, LHW is such a better division for Ward. SMW is looking terribly weak.
Good move by Ward he's finally made a good career move, the first in a long time. His options were limited at super middle, with DeGale and Jack signed to Al Haymon and others simply not wanting to risk a loss to Ward for so little financial again. Light heavy is a stronger division and Kovalev seems to want the fight and there isn't exactly a queue of fighters lining to face Ward. Pascal would be another good opponent who has a strong fan base in Canada and who has never seemed the kind of fighter to decline a tough fight.
Yuniesky Gonzalez and Eleider Alvarez are ranked outside the top 30? :rofl I think I've heard everything now. Oh, I see now we have a BoxRec warrior. The same BoxRec that has Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. inside the top 15 and has Canelo at #3 p4p. Yeah, Gonzalez is obviously a bum, though. atsch
No one is lining up to fight Kovalev either, though. Stevenson fight can't happen due to the promoter issues, and Beterbiev turned down a fair offer from Kovalev to fight in Russia.
In terms of meaningful fights that's true but Ward is struggling to even find low level opposition for his next fight. I'm sure there are plenty of others who are willing to fight Kovalev even if they are at the level of someone of his last opponent like Mohammedi. But Ward from what we are hearing is struggling to even get that level of opponent to fight him at 168lbs. At 175lbs maybe he can actually find an opponent for the Nov 21st date for the undercard of Cotto/Canelo. It won't be anyone great as there is less than 9 weeks to the fight as I doubt many top contenders would risk a fight on such short notice.
Good move for Ward imo. Opens up more meaningful fights. Agree with most that SMW isn't particularly strong right now
