I’m just trying to get a gauge on what Saudi money means on the level of the Wardley vs Clarke rematch. I know that Saudi pays huge money for the mega fights, but this is co-main event. Yet I’ve heard/read several things about these two getting paid crazy high money compared to their first fight. 1. Does anybody know their purses for the rematch? 2. What were their purses for the first fight for comparison? 3. Would they stand to make more money on British soil for this fight, or does the Saudi money trump that even?
Ignore the previous poster, it's that troll Jim back again. I can't find much details on the purses but I read that the fight broke down once due to fee not agreed so someone was most likely holding out for more. Decent fight looking forward to the rematch but can't find any details of the purse amounts.
Appreciate the input. I’m stoked for this fight! First one was entertaining and I hope they put on another show. Who is your pick for the rematch?
Yeah that sounds about right. I was figuring around 500k or so each. Based upon interviews with Clarke I’ve seen it sounds like he already makes pretty good money per fight due to the Bronze medal and such. Said he has a house and several properties already, and that doesn’t come cheap these days. Good for him, I wish him more success and the same for Wardley.
It's a disgrace a top British title fight is going ahead in Saudi. Shame on the BBBoC for sanctioning it. British title fights should be in Britain. This should be on at the O2 or MEN with a stacked undercard.
Why is it a disgrace? Surely you have no issues with the fighters getting the best money they can for fighting? and if that means the fight happens in Saudi or any other place I don't see the issue personally. Would I prefer it was on in the UK? of course but if they are getting the kind of money on offer then I have no issues with them getting it
The British Boxing fans are being denied an opportunity to watch this live at the O2 due to the deep pockets of the sportswashing brigade. People may begin to understand why it matters when others also sell their soul and for example we find the FA Cup Final and Champions League Final being played in Saudi. Will never happen they say - sportswashing loot talks and every sporting event has a price now.
I partly agree with you, in that the highest bidder has generally always got big events. There's a reason we no longer see Atlantic City hosting boxing events and they tend to be in Las Vegas instead. For me watching on TV, Riyadh offers a friendlier timezone than Las Vegas, so having the likes of Fury v Usyk and Beterbiev v Bivol there are no skin off my nose. I do have a fundamental problem with the British title being contested outside of the UK. This is a domestic match-up for a domestic title, and should be held in a major domestic venue. No hate on the fighters for taking the money here, but am sad that the promoters and Board permit it.
