I want to make it clear that in the US, nobody knows who Ward is ether, maybe some people in his hometown.

It's not like you go to the breakroom at work and everyone is saying "You see that Ward fight, who he fighting next?" They are likely talking about college basketball, and if boxing does come up its "When Mayweather and Pac going to fight...is Oscar still the Champion?" If you were to bring up the name "Ward" in a boxing context, they will likely think you are talking about a Mark Whalberg movie.

Arguing the popularity or mainstream appeal of Ward and Triple G right now is such a mute point.

That's the question we're all asking.

    And its a legitimate question.

This is very much how I see it. There seems to be a touch of nostalgia, but the big A class match-ups we remember were actually quite few and far between.

In general as in most divisions there's usually one guy out in front at any one time, mainly fighting fairly average opposition - every now and again there'll be a big fight as the latest contender to make a splash gets a title shot, then they either fall short or there's a changing of the guard.

I also see no reason to think of the MW division as qualitatively worse than it was a few years ago, or than the divisions around it.

GGG is very exciting to watch, but I'm not impressed with his resume up to this point.

There's PLENTY of fighters at 160 and 168 that would have similar records to what GGG currently has if they fought the same low level of opposition that Gennady has.

It doesn't help matters that there's a cold war between the 2 networks, so essentially the competition pool is quite diluted for him. He can't fight Kid CHocolate because he's a Showtime fighter and Martinez is coming off a very long layoff and absolutely deserves his big payday against Cotto.

Instead of him fighting tomato cans, he should move up to 168 and fight Ward. That fight can EASILY be made. If Abel Sanchez is going to make such bold claims about how great his fighter is, why not take an exponential step up in challenge and take on the #2 P4P fighter in the world? He fights on the same network and that fight could easily be made.

He can't go down to 154 because FLoyd is a Showtime guy, as is Canelo and Lara. This netwrok situation is a detriment for everyone in the sport, especially the fans, so he needs to grow a pair and consider fighting up at 168 if no one has any interest in fighting him at 160. It's only 8 pounds, Jesus, FLoyd has gone up 5 weight classes (4 lineal titles,) Oscar went up 6 weight classes, even Manny went up 8 classes (4 lineal titles.)

If this guy wants to be a true P4P great, you have to move up if guys aren't interested in fighting you.

FLoyd wanted to fight Casamayor at LW and even Freitas but neither one of those guys had ANY interest to fight FLoyd. So he went to 140 and took on Gatti. This is what great fighters do, they don't wait around in the same division if they can't get big fights. They have to be pragmatic about the situation and go up in weight class if necessary to secure big fights.

I like GGG a lot, he's a very fun fighter to watch. But his resume up to this point for a guy who's already in his 30's with the type of boxing experience he has is nothing short of pathetic.

Ward would destroy GGG. It's obvious to anyone with eyes that he has been facing bums and low B level opposition.
He stands up too straight and is much too slow to face Andre Ward.
Virgil Hill spoke the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

    Equal terms? That's a laugh!
Why would GGG, a man who has faced no one be equal with the #2 P4P fighter in the sport?
Sounds exactly like Lucien Bute's management to me, and we all know that as hard as he was hyped, the reality is, Lucien Bute is a B level fighter at best. We'll see the same is true for GGG.

and that should be ! :yep

American people barely talk about Ward on this forrum. Although is one of the best, if not the best boxer on the planet, he's irrelevant in terms of marketability !

On the other hand people are going crazy about GGG on this american forum ! The boxing world needs an exciting fighter like Tyson and that is GGG ! When you T/K.O your opponents left and right its hard for the people to not like you !

    :yep:good:smoke

    Haters gonna hate ! :|:|
