Frank Warren is deluded if he honestly can't see that DeGale is seriously unpopular. he's got the style and ability to be a really popular fighter but people really dislike him because of his personality and ego. they said theywere booing 'inaction' but they were booing like mad as soon as he was in view on the way down to the ring. they were talking about the crowd cheering everytime Groves threw something and that swaying the judges but thats gonna happen everytime he fights unless he learns some humility. people in the UK love characters in the sport like hatton and Frank Bruno not because they're the best fighters but because they can relate to them like a mate almost. The best thing DeGale could do now is show a bit of humility, admit his mistakes and admit he was wrong and learn from it. even glen mccrory said he doesn't know why he goes on like that as he's supposedly a nice lad when the cameras aren't on him. shame that he'll never do any of the above and warren is too stupid to have a word with him about it. he needs a new trainer and a promoter in my opinion.
I don't think you are understanding it right. In boxing it isn't about how many people support you. It's about how much entertainment you provide and how well you are known. Look at Eubank, Naz, Audley Harrison... at the time they were active I'd go as far as to say the majority of casual fans watched in the hope they were layed out
I agree to an extent, but your missing my point a bit. i'm saying that DeGale can expect things like the crowd reacting to his opponents shots etc to maybe swing very close rounds against him but its based purely on the fact that people don't like him. its easy to say it shouldn't be like that but you know for a fact it is. At least Naz had an air of comedy around his arrogance same with eubank degale just comes off like an utter moron. look at the difference it makes to have the crowd with you. phycologically i don't think he was expecting to be booed by his home crowd in such a manner. he could change it all by just not being such a mug on camera
I suppose It depends on the individual, I know of boxers who say the more the crowd is against them, the better they perform
DeGale is unpopular, I think the whole boxing world wanted him to lose afyer the things he said to George. It was a case of the school bully getting his comeupance. If you talk that much trash, you have to back it up or you look like a fool. Naz said he would never get beat, once he did the aura of invincibility went with him It's the same reason why Floyd will never with Pacquiao, all the videos of him calling himself the GOAT and mocking his opponents would come vback to haunt him if he ever lost DeGale showed George no respect, neither did Jim Mcdonnell, both look like mugs now and both wil forever be ridiculed because they were so wrong about George and their prediction that James could never lose They had better hand over their purse as well.
British boxing needs a 'face' to help sell it to the wider public. George Groves at the moment is appearing a bit more articulate than James De Gale. All the trash talk that James has come out with sounds like bullying and presents the worst aspects of boxing to the general public. Companies like ITV depend on advertising revenue. They have seen advertising revenue drop due to the increase in other channels available. How many companies want their products associated with someone who talks like a playground bully? Much easier to sell the advertising space on another talent show. James' adoption of a trash talking persona will probably cost him money outside the ring regardless of what success he achieves. George does come across better. I think of Henry Cooper and how much he was liked as a personality and how good that was for promoting the sport to the wider public. There are great money making opportunities away from the ring for a boxer if he presents well. I feel that boxers who behave as we have seen James behave do a disservice to the sport at a time when it needs promoting to the wider public. His behaviour blows a massive hole in the long term promotion of boxing being a sport that develops the character of the individual participant through teaching discipline and respect for a fellow boxer.
It's fine being that cocky if you're a) especially good b) have knockout power DeGale isn't the first and doesn't have the second. I'm so happy the witless **** got beaten. The fact so many others feel the same suggests that he really needs to consider how he comes across. His behaviour post-fight was hilarious (unintentionally).
It's too late for him now. He acted like a complete **** in the build up to a fight that caught the British public's attention. Then he got beat. Now everybody in this country is laughing at him. How can he change their opinion now?
I noticed a couple of uncharacteristic Tweets from Degale yesterday. Although they struck me as thinly disguised adverts they also looked like the start of a small charm offensive.
I think there are things they can do to help him.... 1. Stop talking about money - most people don't even know what their parents and best friends earn. Makes him look a twat bragging like that. 2. Take a step back for a good few weeks. No interviews, no photos, **** all. 3. Come out and admit he was beaten. None of this ''how can they do that to me'' bollocks. I mean, there's a Facebook page for pretty much everything now..... http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-a...thought-he-beat-George-Groves/156429044422801
He can't change their opinion which is why the likes of warren and mccdonnell should have been telling him. not that they're great examples or much loved personalities. thing is even if he won then he'd be unpopular and get booed. If he wants sponsorship opportunities etc then he needs to be popular his image needs to sell for something other than a hope he'll get KTFO.
Naseem & Eubank were completely different to DeGale, they were both so ridiculously ott, they were both funny, they were both exciting fighters, they were entertainers as well as boxers the only similarity with degale is arrogance, degale needs to learn how to use it entertainingly as he just comes across as an annoying irritating chav at the moment than a 'love him or hate him' type star
In fairness, Eubank was really unpopular. He was arrogant and untested when he faced Benn. Even though people still didn't like him after, he proved he was a warrior against his sternest domestic test. He knocked Benn out after a terrific back and forth battle. It was easier to forgive his arrogance after that because he showed he was willing to grit it out. After the fight, Benn paid tribute to the man who had beaten him so emphatically. DeGale has shown none of those qualities. Until he learns to be a man about it - and he did lose a close fight to a guy at the same level as him, ultimately - he won't get reccognition or respect. The loss to Groves will ALWAYS be cast up against him.
