He'll most likely get some clown that will go over inside four rounds, when what he ought to be facing is some hard case that will give him ten hard rounds.

 

Thats a fine line to tread when your next fight is a title shot.

 

They should be getting tested ON THE WAY to getting that mandatory ranking, once they are there no promoter is going to start stepping up the opposition. Its just a waiting game from that point on.

Hope Warren doesn't make the same mistake with Bellew and Gavin.

 

That's the pertinent point - most of them aren't world level when they get thrown in.

That isn't to say that they don't have potential, but they simply aren't tested.

Nicky Cook is the best example I can think of. Beat some half decent opponents at domestic level but racked up the three titles.... was made WBO mandatory to Luevano and was kept waiting, and had one eight rounder in 18 months before being hammered.

Moore and Rhodes had the best idea. Instead of marking time and waiting they got in there and made the fight. The winner advances and the loser is left to pick up the pieces and come again (or not in this instance).

If Burns can't beat (say) Carl Johanneson, Kirakosyan, or Sykes even, he can forget doing anything against Martinez and simply shouldn't be there for his own safety as much as anything.

Most of these guys arn't good enough to get a legit belt the "proper way", so I guess Warren makes sure they earn well with what they've got.

I'd much rather fighters went the domestic/ Euro route but times change and the WBO seems to be the way that Warren gets his boxers paid.

Make no mistake though Ishy, even if these guys went the old fashioned way, Burns would still be given a soft opponent in this situation. The quality of his opponent while he waits for a world title shot and the fact the opposition during the rest of his career hasn't been top-notch are two seperate issues.

That's definitely true.

I like Burns, I do, but you cannot justify him being in a world top 10, when he hasn't even boxed a single top 30 opponent!

The best two fighters he faced (Johanneson and Arthur) both beat him handily and weren't anything above British level themselves!

Granted he's obviously improved, but the difference in class between a shot Gomez and a prime, unbeaten (albeit average in the grand scheme of things) champion is huge.

The biggest aim I'd have if I were the board is making sure the best British fighters actually held the British title, and putting the Commonwealth title to grass.

The Euro title is going the same way, the same could be said for the British, given some of the fights that have been made of late.

You boys have nailed it.

Talented as a fighter is, he will not be prepared to competing with a world class operator unless he has already mixed in that kinda class. Warren didn't do a shocking job with Hatton in retrospect; the likes of Tackie, Olivera and Phillips (as well as the decent domestic oppo Ricky faced) saw him well prepared for not only fighting an alphabet titlist, but an extremely dangerous and formidable champion, on the wane admittedly, but then Warren never seems to want to put his lads in with fighters seemingly smack bang in the middle of their prime. And if he has, it's after lots of disappointing 'mandatories' (Manfredo for a stadium fight? Come off it)

Hopefully Simpson will have a good opponent to make the card really worthwhile, but for Burns the best opponent will be the matey that just battered Lawton, but whose name escapes me as I'm stoned (and therefore can't be arsed to paste it from further up the page in Beestons post )

 

Simpson is fighting Smith. Tough fight for both i expect a Smith win.
