FRANK WARREN has warned Amir Khan he has put his career at risk by signing for American promoter Golden Boy.

Amir Khan left British promoter Warren to sign for Golden Boy last month and is now being lined up to make his US debut on May 15.

No opponent has been confirmed yet for Bolton’s WBA light-welterweight champion but Khan says his team are talking to New Yorker Paulie Malignaggi (right) after Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez showed no interest in facing the Briton.

Malignaggi, 29, is a former IBF world champion who was stopped in 11 rounds by Manchester’s Ricky Hatton in 2008.

But Warren reckons that Khan, 23, will be taking the easier option by facing Malignaggi and avoiding Argentine Marcos Maidana. Warren has blasted the choice of Malignaggi as Khan’s next opponent and is not convinced his career is now in good hands with Golden Boy.

He said: “They are saying Maidana is not well known enough in the States but Amir is not known in the States. In his last fight, Maidana knocked out Ortiz, Golden Boy’s golden boy, and that tells you something.

“They are doing this to avoid fighting Maidana. The problem is that Freddie Roach has a lot to say who Amir fights. I struggled to get them to fight Andreas Kotelnik – even for the title. Now they want to fight Paulie Malignaggi, but who cares?

“Malignaggi stank the place out when he fought in Manchester a few years ago and then looked awful against Ricky Hatton, who was past his best.

“They say they want to fight Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden – but Malignaggi has never sold out Madison Square Garden. Amir needs to be in better hands.

“I offered him Maidana in the UK and had agreed terms with Maidana’s promoters Universum. I also agreed with American promoter Gary Shaw for Amir to fight Tim Bradley, the WBO champion.”

Warren is Warren. But I doubt he's exaggerating. The situation is likely that pathetic.

The part that is true...is freddie roach has his fighters on a leash, especially khan....I believe khan would fight anybody at the moment, but roach is saying no to the maidana fight....

I think golden boy promotions may be walking into a trap against paulie, again...

Remember the first diaz fight? "Paulie is shot", "Paulie can't hurt juan" "juan will walk thru paulie, and retire him"....GBP still has the same attitude towards paulie....

I think paulie will be tougher against khan then maidana, but facing maidana now will do wonders for khan in the long run....

I'm not surprised at all to hear Warren say things like this about on of his former fighter.....he has always done it before

With that said he does have somewhat of a point there. Malignaggi is not really a good fight if they goal is to break America. It also has to be noted that they are only fightin Paulie coz JMM pulled out

In summation, Khan - JMM >>>>> Khan - Maidana >>>>>>>>>>>> Khan - Malignaggi. Hopefully after his 'intro' fight Khan can start to take on the best at 140

I have to agree with Warren, I think its unfair on Amir Khan to be honest. Its like people will just discredit any opponent he faces anyway, Although, Maidana is a mandatory so I don't really see how he is going to get away from that fight for long.

Anyway, at the end there "I also agreed with American promoter Gary Shaw for Amir to fight Tim Bradley, the WBO champion"

NO! NO! NO! I am a big Khan fan, but he is just not ready for these fighters! He is much too inexperienced and needs to mix it at a higher level before guys like him are even mentioned!

And about that Paulie fight, despite all this hate for Khan and his chin. I still don't think Paulie hits hard enough to really do much to Khan, I think it will be a fast entertaining fight which Khan would more then likely win by UD.

I think this is jus backlash from Warren still butthurt that Khan desided to leave his stable...and I do believe Paulie makes this a very interesting fight, infact I will be rooting for him but sadly chances are he will lose on the cards...

yep. dropping Maidana to fight Marquez was legit but now we learn that the Marquez fight was far from being agreed to and Khan is going after Malingaggi. Lol. Pathetic.

Plus there are rumours that Maidana had to agree he would not fight Khan for a long ass time. And they set Maidana up with some undefeated fighter who could pull off an upset, instead of a stay busy fight which would make him look good. They keep saying "We are trying to build Khan vs Maidana into a superfight"

Who the **** are you kidding.

I'm an Amir Khan fan but I can't back this ***** move.
