To be honest i think that wouldn't have been a bad bout for Khan. In terms of name recognition it gets him well noticed in the states. Remember guys although his a featherweight Gainer is no bum. I know most don't want to excuse him for the Marquez bout (me included) but lets be real Khans not going anywhere fast. His sorely lacking in fundamentals, doesn't have the power to get anyones respect at 35 despite his flattering record and isn't world class despite the audacious rankings by the "Ring" and his ranking with the WBO.

This is no different to what Warren did with Hatton. Remember when Hatton fought Toney Pep? Thats right Pep was career featherweight who at this stage was even more shot Gainer and far less talented.Im sure it was also a "world title" bout with the WBU on the line. Hatton was also a solid light welter. Dont expect anything different from Warren. Now that his lost Calzaghe and Hatton he`ll protect what he has left which to be honest is nothing.

    Wait and see......

But I certainly think that would be the case. I remember Hatton being touted for huge things pretty early on but ended up waiting a very long time.

I think Khan needs to take some of the blame, no one forced him to extend his deal with Warren.

    Lets see.......

Fight a load of chumps with a PR man behind you who ought to be working for Gordon Brown. Make a load of defences of a strap and have people thinking you are an ATG.

    Or......

Be forced into fighting your leading domestic contenders and once past those, Romanov - and be KTFO by someone along the way.

This is hilarious. Didn't someone on here guess Gainer as a possible opponent a few weeks ago?

I think I know how FW chooses Khan's opponents. He goes on Boxrec, starts on page 5 of the lightweight ratings and works his way to page 10 looking for someone with the right combination of age, inactivity and low KO ratio. If he can't find someone he moves down a division and repeats the process.

good idea. using the page 5 method, perhaps we could see khan in with 41 year old former featherweight kevin kelly.

:scaredas:The sad thing is Warren is not beyond making this fight. He'd even try to pass of Kelley as a legitimate opponent and a stepping stone to a future world title fight. We'd get the 'he dropped Naz a few times and gave him a real test' forgetting to mention that the Hamed fight was at featherweight and that Kelley is WAAAAY past his best now.

And use the Naz angle: Kelly put Asian hero Naz on his ass but couldn't do the same to Khan! Although I'm sure that if Willie Limmond could do it, a 84 year old Kelly is still capable. He's be another former world champion for the record too.

To be fair Rob, Khan must take some of the blame too as its not as if his opposition being under scrutiny is a new thing and he still sat last week with Warren and signed a long term deal.

Also, fighters are not as uninvolved in the decision making as some people think (high profile fighters anyway) Just look what happened when Hatton demanded a big fight....he got Tszyu.

Frank Warren is a cautious customer. He pasy his fighters well and looks after them.

You didn't see Hatton complaining about filling up the Men Arena time after time, making big money, not until 2004.

It's as much the fighter as the promoter, IMO. You never saw Naz, Benn and Collins shirking too many challenges when they were with Warren. These guys were in a lot of big fights.

You see Hatton (who went on to leave Warren to fight a lot of top 10 fighters, even if the performances weren't all great), Calzaghe, Maccarinelli operating with caution under Warren. But you'd think if David Haye were promoted by Warren, that the career would be mapped out in a better, more challening way.

Does Warren attract guys who want the "back door rute", does he turn once ambitious guys that way, or are today's fighters more aware of how much they are worth and just content to stay on the fringes of world class for good money?

    Gainer????

Even I didn't think Warren would stoop this low (both in the emotional and physical sense; the guy's a career FW for ****s sake)

Warren must pay good money to shot fighters
The media boys can spin it all they want but this is getting silly
Put him in with an old warhorse or spent vetrans or something but guys that are shot, cant punch (in the main) and are from weight divisions lower is just getting stupid. He needs meaningul fights, he better of fighting say 3 out of the top say 5 fighters in britan in his next 3 fights then we would really see how good he is. 1 defeat at this stage provided it wasnt a calzaght v lacy thrashing wouldnt be the end of the world. But u can already see the wbo making room for him to fight some taxi driver in a year or two

Gainer have fought about twice in the last 3 years. Both wins were split decisions, one of which was a robbery.

A blown up featherweight who was blacklisted by just about every TV network for his dismal showing vs Marquez in a featherweight unification.

His last meaningful fight saw him spoil on the ropes & get outworked by an inexperienced Chris John.

Khan's next 2 fights could have been Nicky Cook (former European featherweight champion) & Derrick Gainer.

I hear Jackson Asiku is looking for an opponent after his challenge to Chris John for the WBA 126 title was called off yet again!
