Amir Khan could be set for a WBO world lightweight title shot if he beats Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera on Saturday at the MEN Arena, Manchester. With Barrera ranked number one by the WBO and Khan also rated inside the top 10, promoter Frank Warren is lobbying to make the fight a final eliminator. The title is held by Juan Manuel Marquez who beat Juan Diaz in March. "Barrera is number one with them and Amir is the next available contender, so it should be," said Warren. "I hope they will recognise it as that because it deserves to be, we'll keep our fingers crossed," he added. "We'll see what happens and how Amir looks in the fight. "If he does what I hope he can do and what I believe he can do, then this is going to be a big, big occasion and put him in a position which hopefully opens a lot of doors for us to decide what the next move is." Marquez ain't no shot old man. This fight should not happen and if Warren gets this fight (if Khan beats Barrera) he would be mad. For Khan to gain some credability he should be fighting Prescott again to show that his defeat inside a minute was a flash in the pan. Somehow I dont think that is going to happen.
There was a thing on Fight news saying JMM was made super champ by the WBO i was just waiting for this to be made for the WBO title
From WBO site: PRIVILEGES AFFORDED SUPER CHAMPIONS Those fighters recommended by the Championship Committee and approved by the Executive Committee qualify for the following rights and privileges: A. EXTENSION OF MANDATORY TITLE DEFENSE The Championship Committee may extend a Super Champion’s mandatory title defense for good cause shown one or more times beyond the time provided for in the WBO Regulations for World Championship Contests for the purpose of giving a Super Champion opportunity or opportunities to unify the titles of more than one major sanctioning body either in a unification bout or a unification tournament, or any other important match or matches that the Committee determines would contribute to the Super Champion’s legacy or would be of great interest to boxing fans.
Doesn't mention that on their site. Though I bet Warren will want a regular title for Khan to fight for.
:-( Is that for real? If Warren tried to line up a JMM fight, I would seriously have to question the guys motives. Khans career would be over, finished, destroyed.
Woah woah woah...lets get real people, Warren just wants to sell more PPVs for SBO with such comments. I REALLY want Khan to win, but am struggling to convince myself that he will at the moment. Some good justification in another post from Jeff though. I recall that Khan has already fought in a WBO eliminator with one Martin Kristjansen, so to call a fight an eliminator dont really mean jack all in fairness!!
I think its a bit harsh if we all start taking the **** because Warren is aiming him at THE champion rather than A champion. JMM kills him though thats for sure.
Frank might be greedy but he is not dumb, he would never put in Khan vs JMM. He is just trying to get Khan's ranking improved by WBO so other bodies do the same so it can open other titles.
If I was Khan and I'd seen the way Warren was handling everybody elses careers, I'd be pretty ****ing pissed off if he pushed me towards a fight with JMM at this stage.
Eliminator sounds okay to me because MAB is involved. If Khan beat MAB then pitting him with Marquez becomes viable - win or lose.
