I don't think the fight was too inconclusive. Minter retired a year afterwards.

Sibson (who Hagler also stopped) put Minter out of the title picture relatively shortly after the Hagler fight.

Minter was robbed against Hamsho in the final eliminator, Alan is getting disrespected here, he's one of the best champions we've ever had here in the UK, he beat Antuefermo twice & retired him in the re-match. What went so wrong for Alan against Hagler was simply this, 1st, he's got this mentality about him in that he'd sooner have a tear up with you & 2nd he was prone too cuts as we know, easy too say now but if Minter had been just a little bit less aggresive at the start there was no reason that he could'nt have beaten Hagler on a tight points decision, i know most would say highly unlikely but i'd like too hear why not & on what expeareance that opinion it's based on:smoke

Minter was dominated over the 3 rounds and cut to shreds. Nothing inconclusive about how it ended, apart from Minter not being out for the full 10 count.

It's not my intent to disrespect Minter. He was a very good champion. But the fact is, Hagler beat him from pillar to post for 3 rounds. I was in shock, I believe in the second round, when Minter waved Hagler in to battle. Hagler came in alright.
I agree that Minter could have and should have fought a different fight. But to suggest he could've decisioned Hagler based on what we saw in the fight (Hagler cutting him to shreds in 3 rounds with legitimate punches), is one of the furthest stretches I've ever heard on this site.

Minter landed a heavy shot early on and saw this as a sign of success. He followed up and played straight into Marvin's hands. Hagler loved a guy who came to him.

If you lead against Hagler then your chance of winning falls rapidly.

Minter then had chances against Hamsho and Sibson and lost both chances to get a rematch. The Hamsho fight was a clsoe one though and Minter could have easily got the nod.

Minter did fight a bad fight. And the result doesn't do justice to his ability.

Based on the fact that Mintor was two tiers from being on Haglers level. Hagler raped Mintor and would have stopped him from punishment had it not been cuts. Mintor was getting pounded like a railroad spike. Hagler was a better boxer than Allen, too, so how in the hell do you think Mintor had a chance of winning?

The Minter-Hamsho fight was a final eliminator. It was very close, similar to Alan's first fight with Vito Antuofermo. He got the nod in one and not the other. As for Minter's fight with Hagler,I agree if he'd boxed more intelligently, the fight would have lasted a lot longer. It would be pushing it thought to say that Minter would have taken it. What I remember most vividly about that bout was the ugly political backdrop which Minter was to blame for. A lot of you may recall that,in the pre-fight hype,Minter was quoted as saying that he was n't going to lose his title to a black man. He had the chance to emphatically deny that he said that, which he never took up. Of course the knuckle scraping neanderthals of the National Front had found themselves a token in Minter. Had n't they ? After winning fair and square,Hagler had to walk the gauntlet of bottles being thrown at him, most probably by the NF morons that Minter had willingly or not, courted. Complete disgrace.

Stevie G: yeh i was going too put that in & i remember clearly the pic in the Sun or Mirror of Alan stood with arms folded, this may appear as me defending him but i'am not, but that sort of statement was common place back then & more so in reflection he & most people viewed "black" as in johnny foriegner, especially where Minter hails from, don't forget all our school teachers were ex-military & the map of the world was on every wall coloured pink & every frog was a onion gobblin coward, no PC brigade around then, different times & immigration was front page, Big Daddy IDI Amin comes 2 mind:lol: It was all the "John Bull" statements he's said & others that sucked him into a scrap for his own stupid reasons.

I'am just tring too give Minter a bit more of the benifit of the doubt (maybe undeserved) here as he was a extreamly good boxer which again is overlooked by the u-tube brigade/X-Box/PS3 champions & as we've said if he'd boxed with a bit more common sense it would have been a much tighter affair, i'll always remember Sibbo's comments after the weigh in with Hagler, saying he was shocked at the length of Haglers arms. Yeh that was a bad night indeed & i really felt sorry for Hagler being denied his moment of glory by the scum & yeh back in the 70's/80's in was'nt for the feint hearted was it, 3 fights a night or yer money back & no booze required:rofl

Every small bill i've been too back then had a tear up in the seats, every dick in boots & braces showed up, did'nt that happen in Paris as well after Sibbo won the Euro title, a load of brits leapt into the ring, i know some ***** let of C.S gas at the frank tate fight, dear o dear, come on in all ye tourists, the locals don't bite:smoke
