Hagler, is one of the baddest warriors of them all. Miss you Marvin.

I disliked Minter for a long time after for those comments. Hagler went on to say that he would never touch white flesh and refused to shake hands or something... Minter has said since that he was asked to promote the fight by coming up with a war of words. He totally misjudged what was acceptable.

To be fair, I know that Minter's best man at his wedding was black. I've seen and spoken to Minter a few times and I don't think he is racist. He went on record saying that he regrets those comments now.

Minter was a notch (or 2) below Hagler but Marvin had a knack of under-performing against anyone who could draw a lead from him. Minter would most likely not have won but Vito managed a smelly draw at home, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Minter does too.

Yeh, good post, thats about right & fair mate, what was acceptable too say back then is'nt now obviously & rightly so, but you had TV programmes such as "death us do "Part" & "Love thy Neighbour" but of course if you ai'nt on the recieving end of whats considered popular humour then it's a whole dif world, but Minters no racist, TRIBALIST most def & ai'nt we all, human nature that, & thats where it blurs a little, but back then it was mainstream but now we have compleate 3rd generation assimulation & common identity & where we all sing from the same song sheet then it's all 4 one & one 4 all:yep I think Nigel Benn made that his own:smoke

As you've pointed out, antou pinched the draw against marv & thats the point i tried too make about him about him being able too make marvin look a bit ordinary by making him commit too the lead off, that as we know was his only hope as anything else was doomed especially the way he cut up, ah well it's all wishfull thinking.

You paint a pretty accurate picture of what things were like then :good Yeah,I would go along with the view that Minter was very tribal as opposed to being out and out racist. He should have spoken out the very next day, though. I agree that he was one of our best fighters of recent years. Those fights with Kevin Finnegan !!!!

I went to the fight; the scariest thing I think I ever known, lucky the ol' man sensed what was going to happen, and we got out of there real quick (I was six).

Minter's classless comments and acts (making Hagler strip) got him a terrible reputation, and I get the impression Hagler would of rather of vacated his title than fight Minter again.

It rightly took Hagler a long time to come to terms with the British fans who ruined what should of been the finest moment of his career.

I live in Minter's home town, he caused a lot of trouble with his demons in the late 80s.

But I think he has chilled out a bit, and hopefully sorted out his problems, I know he has moved to a quieter town, and his son who boxed (Ross), seems to have a bit of class about him as a person.

i know that hagler was on his way to victory. there was nothing minter could.

3 rounds is not enough though. leonard whipped hagler for the first 3 rounds in 1987

a rematch would of been a bit more lucrative than other fights out there

I remember that promoters were talking seriously about a Hagler-Minter rematch, possibly to be held in Boston. Minter's 1981 defeat to Hamsho, however, cost him the rematch. Hamsho was matched with Hagler instead later that year.

    about to mention this

I would say these are 2 of Haglers best wins

    Minter and Sibson

    :yep

I saw him at a boxing show in March and he was drunk but a total nice fella. Although i have heard some bad things about him i found him a total nice guy

Just out of interest, anyone old enough to remember what the betting odds were on this match? Was Minter a slight favourite? I assume Minter was a slight fave in UK.

In the rematch Fulgencio Obelmejias suffered one of the most brutale knockouts seen. And Hamsho had to have 55 stitches, to repair the damage to his face. Do you think Minter really wanted a rematch?
