But winning it 4 times doesn’t get you a win?

Being #1 in the world is the boxing equivalent of being #1 in the world.

When you are the first British female athlete to achieve that, it carries greater significance (rightly or wrongly) than if there was a greater track record of success.

If you're being critical, it was a non-Olympic and non-worlds year for athletics, which tends to distort things as the Americans (and to a lesser extent all athletes outside Europe) approach the season differently as there is no major championship to peak for.

Either way, there have been far more contentious nominations.

It's pointless arguing about it as it's a stupid title from the outset. Are they voting for the best achievement or the best personality? A look at some of the past winners suggests its frequently the latter. Froome's exploits are super human, but he's got where he is in part due to his one track devotion to his sport, not through his capacity to engage with people or show a lighter side.

Thomas won the single greatest challenge for an athlete and he did it from the number 2 position on his team whilst being a likeable human being. He's as good a choice as anyone and I doubt any sportsperson worth their salt is losing sleep because they didn't win this award.

It objectively isnt in terms of income, and amount of TV time and TV spending.

Secondly I disagree that the Commonwealth Games is the equivalent of the Championships top scorer etc...
A third of the Worlds population has an interest in the Commonwealth Games, it’s the 2nd largest Multi Sport event in the world calendar.

The Commonwealth games for 100/200 metres excludes the biggest and best nation in those events; the USA. So it is pretty much second tier for those events

Again, you fail to recognise the significance of an English athlete finishing the year as the fastest woman in the world over 100m & 200m, That has never happened before, it’s rarer than a British tennis pro winning a Grand Slam or Wimbledon which was enough for Murray to win SPOTY. Asher Smith certainly deserves her nomination.

Fastest time of the year when its not world championships or Olympics isnt that important in track and field. However winning the bronze at the 200m in the CW & a gold in the 4 x 100m relay, for a British female is a very good achievement, no one is doubting that. Is it an achievement that transcends British athletics alongside the elite achievements of other sports? Now that is my question here.

I dont think it does personally, but I guess they also considered her golds at the Europeans which is even lower down the pecking order than CWs in terms of sprints in track and field. Her achievement is likely the stand out in terms of British women in athletics so well done for that, there are alot of great achievements in other sports to consider though so its a big ask to include her.
