Seemingly the whole family were a nightmare when Minter was battling the bottle. They lived in an area of Crawley called Langley Green, and for a time in the mid 80s the place was a no go area the problems were that bad.

But Minter does seem to have settled, he married (remarried) and moved out the town and lives in the Surrey countryside and I have heard nothing of any troubles in recent years.

Alan was a huge middleweight on the same scale as Monzon, he was also southpaw, tough and determined over the 15 rounds if need be.
These advantages, along with average skills, made him a good handful for anyone.
However, he was not unbeatable and prone to cuts.
Being British champion gave him a platform to gate crash the world scene like other British title holders who, IMO, might not have had that opportunity if they had of been born in US or elsewhere.

I liked Alan. A speedy southpaw, good jab, very sharp punch, could handle 15 rounds no problem. Loved his fight with Ronnie Harris, which I thought was fought at break-neck speed. Saw the Seales fight where he had another head growing out of his forehead from a probable butt (a punch wouldn't do that). Saw the Hamsho fight and felt Hamsho just nicked it (never saw Hamsho hurt before that 5th round). Totally liked Minter, but I gotta say it, Vito was robbed in their first fight.

Wow, that makes sense. Out of respect people tend to say “he was bad with the drink” which can hide a multitude of sins. During the 1980s Alan was often in the studio as a pundit for the mcguigan fights. Then it just stopped. I often wondered why he wasn’t asked back. For a time He was almost on the brink of becoming a co commentator with Harry Carpenter. Much much later he did do some commentary on Eurosport about 2004, but he was less good by then.

From what I understand Mick Minter was considered to be more of a handful on the cobbles than Alan was? Didn't Alan have a "disagreement" with Kevin Sheeran once?

I think I read that he used profanity on live tv, which got him effectively banned.
