Someone stated that they weren`t surprised than Tyson was rated above Hagler P4P in a list of the Top fighters of the last 50 years in 1996 by the ring magazine because during his comeback he beat three world champs to unify the title, but it got me thinking was that much of an achievement because the title holders in the heavyweight division were not world class fighters. Then I wondered how good was Minter when Hagler beat him to win the undisputed middleweight title? You could include the champions Tyson beat during the 80`s except Tucker who I felt was one of the best fighters Tyson ever thought.
Yeah, he's better on a P4P basis than guys like Trevor Berbick or James "Bonecrusher" Smith. Like most of the guys not named Holmes who held HW title belts in the 80s, in most eras they are fringe contenders. The 80s was one of the weaker eras in HW boxing, a real wasteland. People complain about the quality of HWs in the 21st century, but they should have lived through this era like I did for a real comparison. Trust me, these guys put the "M" in mediocre.
Being a world champ during a weak era doesn`t make you world class, only Tucker beat a good fighter to win his belt, the other`s beat lesser competition, Minter beat Vito A.
yeh i didnt actually say they were better than minter, nor do i have any need to enter that debate, its done and dead debate for me, and should be for you too. i just said they were world class, thats all.
I agree Minter was a good fighter, probably just as good if not better than anyone Tyson fought in his prime other than a well past prime Holmes P4P. I wouldn't personally rate Tyson's competition or rate him higher than Hagler. Because when you look at Hagler's competition during his title run. And how that competition did against other world class competition not named Marvin Hagler . It's easy to see he fought/dominated a very good group of world class competition. And a few , Like Mugabi, Hamsho, Obejeimas, Sibson, Hearns and Roldan probably win The middle weight championship or a version of it if their was no Hagler. And also the version of Duran that Hagler fought probably would win a version of the Middle weight championship if their was no Hagler.
The 80's had some good HW's. They weren't mediocre, they were just so inconsistent, many of who had out of ring issues. It was frustrating. They've always been known as the 'lost generation' If you were to list the fighters and look at their skills, many of them were better than the non elite guys of today, such as: Stiverne, Whyte and Chisora etc.
