I think with Ali his punches were very fast and accurate, people did not see them coming and the punch you don't see does more damage.

Yes, but he did deserve it. Ali was a mover, it is impossible for him to get set and hit you with big shots and therefore no one thought he had the power. Remember his motto was jab and move, stick and move.
