Ok first off , this must be one off the most debated things in boxing history and maybe also on this forum so I am sorry if you started puking already I say he wasn't. Why? Well first of all yuo can never say he was/is the greatest. Because in the end it's just an opinion. So imo you can say I think he's the greatest, but not he is the greatest. Another point is that even non-boxing fans/insiders (from high school girls to businessman) never saw a match of him but because of his personality and his political opinion say he was the greatest. Well I am sorry but when I rate Ali the boxer I don't care about how great his rhymes were, how he talked, what a great personality he had. Ali is an icon. When I judge Ali's boxing career I look at TWO things: his fights (how he boxed) and his record. I have him in my top 5. But it's annoying that a lot of people who never actually analized his BOXING career say ''He is the greatest''. At least say '' I THINK he is the greatest''. Peace !!!
I have analyzed his fights and he'll always be The Greatest to me. It doesn't matter how it is worded it is obviously a matter of opinion.
I agree there was and is better boxers out there with better skills, and boxing records than Ali. I think Ali's popularity comes from being a heavyweight, his style of fighting, and his cockiness. Hes just an icon with famous words like you stated. Saying that he does belong in the Top 5 for fighting the greatest boxers of his time unlike the so called "greatest" boxer today.....Floyd
Yes, Ali is the Greatest. With the exception of Marciano, who I would have to flip a coin for the winner, I favor a prime Ali over any other Boxer ever: Louis, Dempsey, Tyson, Lewis, SRR, Greb...........................
Ali beat Liston as an under dog, he later beat Foreman under similar circumstances. To do that twice in your career, in such big contests, will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.
Ali was the greatest . No other champ had to go through the guys that Ali did. Liston and Foreman were supposed to kill him and he knocked both of them out. After three years off he waded through two guys who would be formidable in any era, Quarry and Bonavena in a 8 week period. Then 6 weeks after that he takes on Frazier! that would be like Floyd Mayweather taking on Cintron, Margarito and Cotto in a period from October to March. Marciano was great, but his career was realativly short, and he didn't have as many formidable contenders to deal with.Dempsey hardly defended his title at all, and Louis fought a lot of bums. Yes Ali was the greatest, or at least the loudest of the greatest.Maybe Johnson or Marciano are on a par. Maybe.
Just like Tyson called himself the "Baddest Man on the Planet"and it stuck the same happened with Cassius. They love to tear down Hoya's iffy decisions all the while Ali was in many more controversial fights.
In a H2H sense he's an absolute monster, one of the hardest fighters at Heavy to deal with and or beat, ever. In a P4P sense, he's not #1. I think that much is obvious.
Good to see that there still is some interest. I see that some over here are talking about the greatest at heavy, but I ment p4p. So I will change that in the title. Sorry for that. Btw I still notice some people saying he IS the greatest instead of I THINK he's the greatest. Don't forget people; in the end it's all just an opinion. Cheers!
Ali had many haters if not more haters than Oscar De La Hoya. He is however in my opnion the greatest heavyweight of all time, he fought in great fighters, beat great fighters, and looked great doing it. First 3 time heavyweight champ. Original heavyweight style of boxing. Foreman, Frazier, Liston are in most poeple ATG heavyweight list, also has contenders liek Norton, Patterson, Bonavena etc to back up his record. Unlike many of the former greats i think he favours well in the H2H argument aswel. ali for me is the best heavyweight of all time.
