He is probably the greatest HW ever. Only Joe Louis could compete with him. P4P the greatest? **** no, Ali is not Top5, and he's also arguably not in the Top10.
I agree that it's very impressive and he deserves mad props for that. But there is something about Ali beating Foreman that makes it less meaningfull to me - he didn't give him a rematch. Ali outsmarted Big George for the first time but he probably felt that it wouldn't happen again. Besides I would like to see how would Ali manage with Lennox, Vitali and other modern huge, powerful and skilled HW's. That would tell a lot. All in all I still think Ali belongs to top 5 ATG. I don't really know should I consider him The Greatest
What was really remarkable about Ali is that most of his biggest fights came when he was past his prime. He started fighting professionally around 1960, I think, and then lost two or three years because of draft issue. To come back past your prime with your skills diminished (a loss of speed and agility in a fighter whose overwhelming superiority was based on those two assets) and slug it out with up and coming ATG heavyweights is an amazing accomplishment. Whether he was the greatest is an impossible question, as no one can say conclusively that anyone is the greatest. But one of the four or five greatest ever, absolutely.
Do you think louis could handle the speed of ali :huh plus ali had great punch ressistance, for me ali beats louis handily on points. Obviously though its all just opinion to ans the thread no he isn't p4p no.1 but is hw no.1
Agree. Watch some Louis fights if you can find them. His opponents were stationary, and smaller men for the most part. Ali would make Louis look very awkward, make him miss again and again, and likely take him out late in the fight.
Ali's image on this very board benefits from him being long retired, so we only judge him by the most exciting/best fights. Look at how many people ***** at a fighter who had one boring fight or controversial decision, and imagine that amplified by the number Ali had, combined with the fact he was a loud mouth jackass half the time. It doesn't make him any less of a fighter in the slightest- it's more of a sign of how fickle we are judging fighters by such a "what have you done for me lately" attitude.
I've never heard anyone ever refer to him as the p4p greatest before, greatest Heavyweight, is a reasonable statment, but pound-for-pound, there are plenty of guys who transcended multiple weightclasses whilst winning title along the way. I have a hard time acknoledging really any heavyweight as a "p4p" king really, unless maybe they started at middle and climbed to heavy and were still force.
I think i will let the great man ali himself tell you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fK2Cc2mxNA P4P Ali rates Robinson the greatest of all time. While obviously rating himself the greatest heavyweight of all time. :good
i think it is especially hard for a heavyweight to be regarded in the p4p argument, because they are naturally bigger than most guys, and power is usually there main asset, Ali had other attributes that could transcend the argument though. i think the reason lighter guys who have titles at different weights get prority is because they have proved that they can beat the best at different weights, while we can only compare heavyweights against other heavyweights. Thats not to say there are not fighters who are exemp from this rule, Hopkins, hagler, Monzon, Calzaghe dominated one division and are often put forward in p4p debates.
He is probably the most overated fighter in history, whilst being one of the best! I think he is the best heavyweight of all time although not my cup of tea, i think some of the **** he said was racist and it rubbed me up the wrong way, whether he meant it or not? His resume speaks for itself though he fought everyone and anyone. Pound 4 pound greatest though for me has to be Robinson
