Ali would smoke Marciano, many Heavyweights stand a better chance, and I'd probably even favor a few. In a P4P sense, you'd have to be foolish to assume he's the most skilled, not by a long shot. In an accomplishments sense, I rank him #5 P4P of all time, and there are those who consider that generous.
You're on the fast track to losing all credibility. From the Cruiserweight comment to the Foreman comment, what a ridiculous post.
The only thing I didn't like about Ali as a person was his disrespect of Joe Louis and his admiration for Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson didn't give a damn about black people, and held black fighter's down for years because of his antics. If it wasn't for Joe Louis being the man he was, Ray Robinson, Sonny Liston, and Ali would have never gotten the chance to fight for a title. Instead of calling out Louis for being "an Uncle Tom", he should have been calling out Jack Johnson for being "a no good *****".
I take it you don't comprehend the meaning of P4P. Or are you saying he'd beat Robinson if they were the same size? He'd beat Armstrong? Greb? Hearns? If they were in the same weight class?
Great so the concensus here is that most think he is the greatest heavyweight but definately not the greatest p4p. You know what the problem is, non-boxing insiders/fans most of the time don't know the term p4p, so they just say he is the greatest ever. I started this thread because yesterday on Dutch tv was in interview with Regilio Tuur (he ko'd kelcie banks '88 OG) and when asked who was the greatest he said ''definately Ali''. But I was like ''What??!!.. Maybe as a former boxer and boxing insider you could have mentioned (to make it more clear) that he was greatest heavyweight ,for all the non-boxing fans!!!!'' You feel me?
That pretty much sums up my opinion. There is a difference between best fighter, p4p (and you could make a case for a number of other boxers- SRR, Armstrong, Duran, and Greb-before you make Ali's case), and greatest boxer...at which point it's down to Ali and Louis in terms of how they impacted the sport.
it's difficult to be objective where Ali is concerned. He is a global icon who trancends the sport. People who have no interest in boxing and who have never seen his fights know of him and what he stood for, the story of him throwing away his gold medal, his stance on Vietnam etc. He has done more to promote boxing than any other fighter, and of that there can be no doubt. His strong views divided communities and even households, you either love him or hate him, but you certainly have an opinion on him. From a boxing perspective he was the dominant force in the strongest era of HW boxing. He fought and adapted to fighters with many different styles, had an awesome chin, great heart and is clearly one of the fastest HW ever. His boxing record reads like a who's who list, and would have no doubt been even more impressive had he not potentially spent his best years in jail. From a P4P perspective he's got to be top 5 AT, though for me he is probably number 4 after SRR, Pep, Duran, with SRL possibly sneaking in at number 5.
