Interesting, I always thought he ended up riding the Dragon a little to long.

Yeah. The end product was the perfect example of using fear in a positive way. Cassius was psychologically utilising Liston's own fearsome personna to overcome him. Muhammad admitted he was scared when the fight started but by the time the first round was over he had gained a mountain full of confidence.

We can stray off topic for a sec.

    Goes by the name Willow.

    Rag Doll cross Russian Blue.

I dug up my floor to ceiling bag and after I pulled out the contents ….in she jumped and began biting the box.

Those are the eyes of a maniac. Doesn’t know whether she’s coming or going or what she wants but despite her diminutive size - she thinks she’s a tigress.

Never was fond of cats but the family forced this one on to me - so she has grown on me over time.

Never buy cats expensive toys…just give ‘em empty boxes - they live for them.

Ali played psychological warfare the whole way through - climaxing in a release of true fear based adrenaline at the weigh in.

Do you think Ali’s premeditated and purposed “act” along with his legit weigh in explosion had any negative effect on Liston?

Crazy people are scary in their own right but I can’t say that it demonstrably put Liston off his own game - though he might’ve been a tad angrier than usual with that cocky kid, lol.

That film was so bad. Will Smith was terrible! Muhammad Ali playing himself in The Greatest was a much better film.

I think the Cassius Clay who ended up outside Sonny Liston's house bear hunting was full of adrenaline and bravado and as others have posted here his heart rate prior to the fight was a cause for concern. The theory about Liston putting liniment on his gloves to get into Clay's eyes was a dirty tactic and Angelo Dundee needed to push Clay out into the centre of the ring to fight Liston as he said Clay considered quitting. Was Clay scared? No. Nervous? Yes. He made Liston quit on his stool. After taking the title and changing his name to Muhammad Ali he sustained a hernia injury in training and the rematch was postponed, apparently Liston went into serious training intent to regain the title and once Ali pulled out and the fight was delayed Liston stopped training and subsequently performed poorly in the later scheduled rematch. Imagine if Ali hadn't pulled out due to the injury and went out to face a seriously motivated Liston? Would the outcome have had been the same? George Chuvalo had said he felt that Ali's best all time performance was in the first Liston fight. I think that is probably a fair statement.

I've never even bothered to watch ALI. Ali wasn't too shabby in The Greatest and the film as whole was pretty good. I wouldn't have a clue how The Greatest did at the box office though.

IF Ali ever felt fear otherwise, and I'm not saying for sure that he did, I would think it could've been in the first round against Foreman. Ali was older, far more mature and experienced but damn, it was George Foreman who had already wiped-out Frazier and Norton. How could that not prey on his mind?

As he did in the Liston fight, Ali came out and fought an amazing, ATG first round. He looked so sharp and fine, perfectly on point but wary enough in his avoidance of Foreman's big bombs. He sent an immediate message to Foreman that he had come to fight. Though still faced with a perilous fight ahead of him, it must've felt great to convert some of that pent up adrenaline into multiple and unexpected successes in just the first 3 minutes.

And let's not forget, Foreman kept Ali waiting in the ring for 5 minutes. What did Ali do? Kept himself ready, warmed up and on the edge, shadow boxing the whole time - the man knew exactly how to deal with pressure, including unforeseen contingencies/obstacles.

Fear is a friend , if you control it.
That's the primary difference in the results of
    Liston vs Patterson x2 and
    Ali vs Liston x2.

Smith did manage to nail the voice. It's not perfect, but it's a very convincing impression to casuals.

Yes I have seen this one before he's spot on! Jerry was an articulate and versatile person. What a shame he ended up with CTE.
