Was Andrew Golota Ever Known as the "Last White Hope" in America?

I was born in '82 and I've never seen overt racism in my lifetime that wasn't coming from someone on tv in a klan outfit. Maybe, I live in the wrong part of the country to experience that, but I've just never seen it. I don't think I even knew what racism was until my teens. Everybody I knew always worshiped Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King as heroes. People who were into sports thought the world of Mike Tyson and Michael Jordan. I don't think anybody gave a **** about Larry Bird. That's the world I've always lived in.

There's always been some professional race baters out there making money off some new injustice but I think that stuff mostly just exists on the fringes. The great white hope thing in the 80s seems more like a cynical opportunistic Don King promotional trick than something America was really feeling.

 

The term Great white hope is forever nonexistent, it has lost its meaning and worth...unless we are talking about the 154 and 147 weightclasses

No but they had high hopes for him when they signed him, but after seeing him on the undercard of the Night of the Young heavweights you knew this guy was nuts when he was butting and biting Samson Pouhua. Didnt surprise me how his career panned out.

 

I thought every heavyweight hope in Poland was white.

And, no, I never once heard him referred to as that.
