A YES man doesn't turn to the ref. and say "Im the cheif second, I stop the fight". On that quality alone, even if he'd only trained Ali for that one fight against Holmes, his acceptance of a TRAINERS RESPONSIBILITY proved him a great trainer. Looking after Ali and Ellis in the finest of Heavyweight eras.. not a bad effort either.

Dundee must be one of a tiny few in the Boxing game with such a fine Trainers record. All the listed names of fighters to have trained under his guidence, wow, huge list. Now, take time to think of the hundreds that aquired assisstence also....

I wonder how many of those who trained under him would suggest he was a YES man??

 Im starting to see a trend with you. You dont like Tyson, you dont like Emanuel Steward. Funny really. Emanuel Steward is the furthest from a yes man. Ive been around him too with Lennox Lewis. He doesnt take **** from anyone, not to mention he is probably the best active trainer in the game right now. He has actually made chicken salad out of chicken ****, how many trainers can do that?:hey
You want to talk about taking a no hoper to a title, Oliver Mcall fits that bill perfectly.

:good He was a great trainer, motivator, cornerman and strategist who often does not receive the credit he truly deserves simply because the fighters he trained were often so gifted. I guess the long list of great fighters (Who could have worked with any trainer) had their reasons for choosing (And trusting!) Angelo!!! He probably was a "Yes" man at times, but also a "No" man when necessary! He would say/do whatever it took to get the best out of the fighters he worked with. I will always hold him in the highest regard!!

:good Christ!! I had forgot about that incident (Ali-Holmes)!! ANOTHER reason why he was a great trainer and not a "Yes" man!

Jimmy Ellis was not a "no hoper" at middleweight. I dont know where that myth comes from.
Ellis was exceptionally good for a novice at middleweight, mixing with vastly more seasoned fighters and holding his own and winning too.

Another quality of Dundee thats clearly understated, in working with 'natural' or 'gifted' fighters, his ability to keep such classed fighters interested attests his great motivational skill.

Angelo Dundee was well-connected. His brother Chris Dundee was quite a big promoter, sent down from New York by the boxing mob to run boxing in Miami.

I agree with you 100% Flamengo my friend, which is why I listed great "Motivator" amongst his many qualities. As you correctly point out, his motivational qualities in keeping gifted/natural fighters interested enough to train at the level required to win their bouts is often understated and under appreciated!

    Nothing special as a trainer.

Absolutely outstanding as a corner man.

So was it Manny's idea for Lewis to come in overweight to South Africa on short notice and then walk in wide open looking for a KO?

He was not an alchemist who would have made a champion out of a second teir talent like Blackburn, Goldman or Futch.

His strengths lay elswhere. He was a one man corner team.
