In other words, most of his defences were against guys who shouldn't have been fighting for world titles?

Corrales a legend? Freitas a legend? Come on. And what does Mayweather have to do with anything? Mayweather beat Corrales by every possible measure and easily outclassed Castillo in the rematch. And what about Casamayor? We're talking about Artur Grigorian. Hearns is great despite the loss to Hagler because he beat other great fighters. Same for Duran. Grigorian did not beat great fighters, let alone great fighters outside of his weight class. I'm fine with calling him good but great is a stretch. Top 10 at lightweight is delusion

He was more than just good.

Probably spent to many of his best years still in the amatuers and over 2 years and 18 fights was unnecessary as a title shot apprenticeship as he was close to the finished product when he turned pro. Supposedly suffered from nagging injuries that interrupted his career significantly.

Still haven't seen a hell of a lot of him actually but his last few fights he was a shell of his earlier reign.

3 of the knockdowns were pretty dubious..at least one from what I can recall was straight up incompentance from the ref.

Just watched the fight, the second kd which was in rd 6 should not have been scored, nor the 3rd kd in rd 7. Freitas was sloppy and wild but won very clearly.Eddie Cotton, the referee was crap.

Then who are the "great fighters" that Corrales and Freitas have had "legendary battles" with. And dont tell me to stay on topic then bring out a list of ten names that have nothing to do with the thread. Why are we even talking about Freitas when Grigorian lost to him? He never even fought Corrales. De La Hoya, Crawford and Holiday might indeed have worse records at lightweight compared to Grigorian. Thats great because none of those four would make top 10 at lightweight according to any reputable boxing historian. And he's the best Uzbekistani boxer ever - wow. If I bought an island and declared it as a new country and I debuted as a boxer from that country, I would automatically become the best boxer of that country, all time. Does this make me a top 10 welterweight now? A legendary middleweight?

What significance is there to the judges being American? The fighters were not?

Freitas is not from the American continent he is from Brazil, the largest country in the South American continent! So stop with the BS about the judges being biased against Grigorian! Grigorian fought 35 of his 39 fights in Germany his adopted country and many thought him lucky to win his previous fight,he only scraped a majority decision. If anyone got the benefit of home town decisions it was him!
He fought one fight outside Europe ,and got beat convincingly.

I vaguely remember one Grigorian fight in Germany where he got a complete gift.I think it was towards the end of his career.

Successful at what? Being irrelevant? You cant even spell "Usbekistan". Why is Castillo great? He beat Corrales. Why is Corrales great? Oh he beat Castillo. Nice one. Casamayor, Barrios great fighters are you joking... you are off your rocker my man

Yeah no doubt who won it mc'cers.

But wasn't a complete beatdown or nothing. After the first KD which was legit, the others were more a case of a younger, stronger guy muscling a slowr, ageing fighter who didn't have the balance and poise of his youth.

It wasn't a very good reffing effort from Cotton.
