I remember his later fights being snoozers but I admired his ring iq. Was he ever in a firefight in his career?
No but he was hit by a Hiroshima like blitzing at the hands of the Krusher in the 12th round of their match.
His first fight with Segundo Mercado was a great fight. Competitive war that ended in a draw. This content is protected
And he somehow went the full distance after taking all that punishment. It’s honestly astonishing that 49 year old Hopkins avoided getting stopped by a prime Kovalev.
Hopkins vs Allen I was sort of messed up, lots of holding and roughing up etc, not really a war but it ended with Hopkins injured.
Mercado 1 = Down twice in a tough grueling fight. Pascal 1 = Down twice again in a tough fight. Echols 2 = Dislocated shoulder after being body slammed had to rally showing alot of heart.
I do wonder if from a certain point in the fight Kovalev eased up on him a bit. It was clearly a mismatch from quite early on, with Hopkins finally looking his age, and it was uncomfortable viewing. Kovalev is one of the few people who knows the feeling of killing someone in the ring and that may have been there in the back of his mind too.
At times Kovalev was barely able to touch Hopkins despite his best efforts. On the other hand, Kovalev´s own boxing completely shut down Hopkins´ offense. Kovalev was always ready to let go that right hand counter.
