At any point of his career? I remember the time when this guy was extremely overrated despite being dropped a few times by journeymen. Some of his fans were saying he would give trouble to Pacquiao or Mayweather. :rofl Then he lost his title to another overrated fighter in Ortiz (who was stopped by Maidana and even Hosejito Lopes!!!) Got dropped and beaten by feather-fisted former featherweight Robert Guerrero, and then KO'd by jorneyman Soto-Carass (who was ko'd by Maidana and lost to Alfonso Gomes). Is Berto top-20 WW now? of course, no. Was he at any point of his career? Now that's a question.
Of course he was. Before he lost to Ortiz he was undefeated and had all the raw tools. Sure everyone knew he had flaws but no one knew he was this bad until Ortiz exposed him.
He was before the Ortiz fight when he still had some of his confidence. Also the WW division was pretty weak then
No. Berto could have been, but he never developed his craft at all. He's a brawler with speed(and decent heart), doesn't have defense, doesn't have much workrate, not a great chin, terrible game planning. He got by with his talent against handpicked opposition and when he stepped up he was exposed.
He had more confidence back then. But he was always a bit top heavy and couldn't handle guys who isn't afraid of him. He's also known to gas after the 8th round. Collazo was probably the first guy who exposed his weaknesses. He was a good fighter, but good match-making made him look better than he really was.
Yes he was. Regardless of what happened afterward, there was a time where Berto was a top 3 WW, top 5 at worst. Being top 5 in a division means you are elite in that division. There is no historical context when the question is "was Berto ever an elite WW?" He was never elite in the sense of comparing to other eras, but to me at least that is not what this thread is about.
Once a good fighter, who held an ABC title, but he was never elite. He lost or struggled with any decent fighter he faced.
