Was Billy Nelson right to force Bakole out for the last two rounds?

I'm not having a dig at Nelson or Bakole but this was a massive talking point from last nights fight and this is a British boxing forum so interested to hear peoples opinions.

I just re watched the Bakole fight and have to say Hunter was excellent, he is a bit ragged at times and maybe not in prime condition but he has skills, he literally broke Bakole down and made him quit.

Was Billy Nelson right to send Bakole out for the last two rounds (with a supposed sore shoulder) or should he have let him quit on his stool? It was a big call to make and you can see Bakole turn back to the corner before the start of the 9th. Nelson told him in no uncertain terms he was not going to let him quit. Just wondering what others would have done if they were in Billy's situation.

Yes. If he was bleeding from the ears or had Blackwell type swelling on forehead then of course that would have been negligent. However, he has another arm, it’s your big moment on terrestrial tv, this is why he chose to work with Billy so that in these moments where you’re questioning on whether you can go on, your man in the corner who has been with you every step of the way in camp, who knows you inside out, can drive you on for 6 more minutes.

Billy knows his man, he did the right thing imo.

    Like Bridie says, subjective.

I would say yes. Billy maybe knew something we didn't regarding Bakole. Wouldn't surprise me if he has moments where he walks out of training etc or gives up on certain drills.

I'm not convinced about the injury either.

Yes, Bakole always had the option to tell the ref he quit. He was outta energy, and wasn't able to dig deep when it mattered. However a lot of that comes from desire and will thro training and Billy must have seen this side to him before and knew he needed a slap and a telling to get him to dig deep and not feel sorry for himself

Yes - knows the situation and his man better than anyone on this forum...

Definitely subjective I agree. In hindsight it appears it was the right decision and I genuinely think he was trying to save his (Bakole's) reputation. The commentator at the time, I think it was Woodhall, said "maybe someone should intervene here" suggesting a third party should have stepped in and withdrawn him.

    Yes.

But I think Bakole had already mentally quit and in hindsight it made no difference at all.

Bakole's first real test and he failed dramatically.

I’m a little lost here but isn’t Boxing simply between 2 guys putting their lives at times on the line in a ring.

So who gives a coach trainer promoter or ref the authority to go against the boxers will during a fight? If Bakole lost his bolloxs which he obviously did then that’s his shout no one else’s imo . Billy didn’t know 100% that he wasn’t injured and if he was and ended up getting brutally KO’d because he couldn’t defend himself then that’s wrong..... if he wasn’t injured and wanted to stop then that was the fighters call and making him look like a dick on national tv isn’t right cos it’s not Billy in there taking the punishment.

At the end of the day fighters do it and we all talk **** about it and that’s a massive difference.

Ask the fighter. I'd assume he woke up disappointed he lost but pleased he didn't pull out of the fight. If so, credit to Nelson.

no for me - didnt seem to be any communication between them and he went on to get stopped and took some very very big shots.

It was the right decision but it didn't really pay off because he still didn't try and turn the fight around, he just stood in his corner taking clean punches.

I agree, I wasn't comfortable watching it and neither were the commentators watching it unfold, they put it on Nelson also and said what a big call it was.

A fighter wants out, openly says he wants out and then gets pushed back out there and then beaten up, takes huge shots and stopped.

Billy Nelson was correct - the injury was not serious enough to quit.

The big man motivated Ricky Burns through 10 rounds with Beltran and he retained his belt with an outrageous draw that evening.

Boxers need many things including heart and bottle but Bakole lacks both.

Bakole looks like the new Audley Harrison.
