Rewatching this fight , its hard for me to comprehend someone like the Douglas who was destroyed by Holyfield would have the advanced ring intelligence to expose Tysons weaknesses. Was it because of Douglas' determination due to his mothers death? Was it due to a pre fight gameplan? was it a coincidence?
Douglas just wasn't naturally a dominant or aggressive force in the ring or in life. His mother died, he was hugely emotional, his endorphins were releasing like crazy to his brain, and the biggest fight of his life happen to be very close to this event. He was at a level that sent him to what is and was the pinnacle of his life, but in his natural self he had no chance of accomplishing.
No, Tyson was a bully who was vulnerable to a big, tall guy who was quick on his feet and skilled. Buster was just the first one of those he fought, he would go on to fight some other guys of that exact desscription in Lewis, Williams and McBride. Tyson would never have got past those guys.
nope...they just watched the james "quick" Tillis fight and saw how effective he was for a good portion of the fight. Buster, being a naturally larger man was just using his obvious advantages. Also, going through the trauma of losing his mother made him somewhat fearless.
Its simple. Douglas fought the way any man 6'4" 230 pounds should against a fighter like Tyson. I'v said it time and time again Tyrell Biggs and Frank Bruno both could have beaten Tyson if they had just stuck to their original gameplans (In Biggs' case his corner also). Both of those men at 6'3" and 6'5" were looking great in the opening rounds and didnt start to get beat until they decided to get in close with Mike and try to out muscle and out slug him at close quarters. I'm sure Douglas was extra motivated with his mom passing but the fact is he fought a smart fight and it was no where near the upset most people make it out to be. A prime Mike Tyson was a hard hitting, vicious, and very tough Heavyweight but was never anywhere near invincible.
did u not watch the documentary on it? Tyson was ill prepared, his corner didn't bring swollen reducer stamp thing, they had to used a condom to fill with cold water to reduce tyson's swelling. Also the long count. Douglas got lucky.
Tyson put in one of his worst performances ever that night. From round 1, the broadcasters were saying that Tyson looked like ****. he didn't even have a proper corner
that may be true for that given night but look at his career from that point on Lewis- used the same blueprint Douglas layed out on how to beat tyson Holyfield- same thing Danny Williams- same thing McBride- same thing although this was also due to the fact Tyson didn't even want to fight that night
Only fighter that would beat Tyson in his prime was Lewis and maybe holyfield. Douglas got the heading down slope tyson when he was overconfident and cut training. Danny, McBride, got the shell of tyson. But Douglas did get lucky that night. All the stars lined up for him.
let's not forget that tyson, a deeply vulnerable fighter in any number of personal and professional ways, had mucked up training camp with all sorts of domestic, professional and personal issues that completely derailed any hope of him being focused in the way cus d'amato once taught him to be.
Douglas was superb no doubt, but did he even have to fight the fight of his life to beat Tyson?? The domination by Douglas was so much high on a scale, how anyone has the audacity to question whether that same Douglas does'nt beat any Tyson at any time is beyond me..... Its unbelievable.....I cant remember such domination over another fighter as Douglas over Tyson....Douglas beat him every which way. Tyson was on the downside, Tyson was'nt motivated, he did'nt have Rooney, blah blah blah...... Mike Tyson was'nt handed his first defeat because he was'nt properly in shape..... Two things were needed to beat an undefeated Mike Tyson....... 1 A sound skillset which includes the physical tools which Douglas possesed over Tyson. and 2. A tough mindset On that night, Douglas was more than qualified on both counts, which = a sound and complete dominant performance. That same Douglas that showed up vs Tyson, in the mindset he was in, beats every short Heavyweight in boxing history......the other two that come to mind are Rocky Marciano and Joe Frazier. With his height, reach, jab, and ability to manuever the ring, Douglas is any small statured Heavyweights kryptonite!
