Was Bute's perfomance really that good considering?

1) Bute and Johnson used to spar so he knew Johnson better than anyone.

2) Johnson is 42 and 5 months older than when he faught Froch.

3) Bute had 14,000 home fans behind him.

4) Johnson seemed to age in the fight against Froch and looked very old in rounds 9, 10, 11 & 12. Did the first 8 rounds against Froch take everything that Johnson had left out of him?

1) Works both ways.

2) Is 5 months that long really?

3) Home fans have never affected Johnson before.

4) He tired against Froch from loading up so much early on, the fight wasn't knocked out of him.

Yeh I take your points Wallet. I suppose i'm looking at it at a biased angle becasue i'm such a big fan of Froch.

Johnson looked like an old man in there for the first time in his career. Bute boxed brilliantly though.

Glen looked so slow against Bute. Froch would win more convincingly then h did last time.

By quite easily i mean a 117-112 type score, obviously not in an easy fight though

If its in Canada I can see a score like that but I still don't think Bute will beat Froch. People have always doubted Froch and I expect him to prove them wrong just as he has in the past!!!

agree with this, I think if froch can beat ward then he goes into the bute fight as favorite for me

I think Bute was impressive he was barely out of 2nd gear and dominated Johnson.

You've got your world champions.. then you've got guys like Lucian Bute.

This article from the brilliant Montreal Gazette sums up Lucian Bute's greatness perfectly:

From the Qmountaintop of his 30th professional victory and his ninth successful defence of his International Boxing Federation supermiddleweight title, Lucian Bute surveyed the potential opposition late Saturday evening and declared that he wants to fight World Boxing Association titleholder Andre Ward.

If I'm Andre Ward, I think about moving up in weight class. Or moving to Outer Mongolia.

The undefeated Bute predicted Saturday that Ward will win the division's Super Six final against Carl Froch, scheduled for Dec. 17, by a decision. That would put him in line for a unification bout against Bute - and that is not good news for Ward.

The fight may never come off. Froch has been lobbying for a fight against Bute and he may get it, no matter how the Super Six comes out - but that is not what Bute wants.

"Carl Froch talks about me a lot," Bute said. "But I want the winner of the Super Six, and it's sure that will be Ward. If he doesn't want me, we'll take Froch."

That's not good news for either Froch or Ward.

In the super-middleweight division, at least, the Lucian Bute who took apart Glen Johnson in front of 14,000 fans at the Colisée Saturday is in a league of his own. Against a veteran former light-heavyweight champion with a thunderous right hand and 68 pro bouts under his belt coming in, Bute pitched a virtual shutout, with only one of the three judges giving so much as a round to Johnson.

True, Johnson is 42, but in his Super Six semifinal against Froch in June, Johnson rocked the Englishman with bombs, left-handed and right-handed. Froch, to his credit, took those shots and kept firing - but the same punches that caught Froch with ease could not tag Bute. He's too quick, too elusive, too well-schooled.

Somehow, the punch count credited Johnson with landing 47 power shots against Bute. If that's so, I missed 46 of them. It was so one-sided that I made a note of it when Johnson's fearsome right glanced off Bute's cheekbone with 45 seconds to go in the 12th round, because that was the first time I could recall him landing squarely.

Before the bout, Bute's trainer, Stéphane Larouche, was talking about Johnson's "monopunch," the bomb that could take out a fighter with a single shot. He didn't, presumably, mean that it was a punch Johnson could land once in a 12-round fight.

"I think I won the fight," Johnson said after, a bit of bravado that is perhaps understandable in a veteran warrior who had just been thoroughly humiliated.

He went on to complain of a swollen right elbow, which he said hampered him after the fourth round - but since Johnson did nothing before or after the fourth, that's a little hard to swallow.

Bute, as is his style, was gracious in victory. "I think it was a great performance. Glen Johnson is tough."

For others, yes. For Bute, no. "To beat him," Bute said of Johnson, "you have to avoid his right, and to do that, avoid his jab. I did that by out-jabbing him every time I could. I want to get better and to do that, I have to fight fights like this one."

You have to believe that Bute and Larouche weren't just blowing smoke when they said they expected a tough fight. But after a cautious, probing start, Bute simply took over, to the point where it appeared at times that he was going easy on his old friend and sparring partner.

"I don't like the way this guy (Bute) fights," veteran boxing announcer Steve Albert told one of his producers after the fight. "There were a few times there when he was landing some head shots and it looked like he could take him out, but then he backed off."

Yes, he did. But I would prefer to give Bute credit for showing some humanity by declining to demolish a former sparring partner. If Albert thinks that is how Bute would approach a fight against Ward, for instance, he's in for as big a surprise as Ward himself.

Because Glen Johnson didn't suddenly get old between the fight against Froch in June and the Bute fight. What happened was that he stepped up against a vastly superior fighter who was almost impossible to hit - and scored at will whenever he decided to step up and throw punches.

Ward, the WBA titleholder, claims he wants to fight Bute. He doesn't. Ward is a good fighter with quick hands, quick feet and some power. He throws from all angles, but he is nowhere near as precise as Bute and he has some habits, like lunging in with his left jab and carrying his left low, that are going to leave him open to one of the best counter-punchers in the business.

I saw Ward's fight against the German boxer Arthur Abraham - a close, tough bout, which Ward won - but if Ward thinks that in Bute he's going to meet another stiff, upright, plodding fighter like Abraham, he's in for a nasty surprise.

Ditto Froch, who is tall and rangy like Bute. The resemblance stops there. Bute is far more precise with his punches and much harder to hit. For Bute, Froch would be a routine night at the office.

In truth, it's beginning to look as though that applies to the entire division, which is why the Super Six has been such a joke.

Without the best super middleweight on the planet, it's simply not that super.
