that just reminded me of the classic commentary from the byrd-ibeabuchi fight-

Jones Jr: Byrd is very smart hitting Ibeabuchi in the body to take some of the power away from him later in the fight.

Merchant: Those punches couldn't take the power away from a mouse.
    (Merchant and Lampley laugh)

Jones Jr: I don't know Larry, go in there and get hit and see if you still think that

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Merchant: I've got to admit a certain prejudice here. There are times when I watch Byrd, if I was a referee I'd want to take a point away from him for non-performance. This is a lot of junk that he's giving us here.

Lampley: But Larry, it's called the manly art of self-defense.

Merchant: Well, I don't see anything manly about this.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Merchant also said about byrd-
"Chris Byrd has two punches - pitty and pat."

Anyway, Vitali had won virtually every round before his injury. Byrd was the one being outboxed.

Merchant also once said about Byrd, "There was a time when a light hitting soutpaw heavyweight would be strangled at birth." No respect.

If i recall correct, Lampley actually responded to that last remark by "He's in the ring with a guy who has 40lbs on him, that's pretty manly" and he had a point. Roy Jones was just calling it like he saw it..

The dirty little secret that vitali fans dont want anyone to know is that Byrd was coming on in the last round taking the fight to Klitschko who had no answer for a Byrd that was coming straight at him.

Was it just a coincidence immediately after that round that Klitschko immediately declared he was too injured to continue lol

klitschko was backing up while avoiding punches. not because byrd was taking it to him

Reading the posts in here and seeing that highlight vid it's easy to forget how ****ing awesome Byrd was and how he had some brilliant moments in the sport. He took a fight on 10 days notice against a guy with 35 pounds and 8 inches of height on him, he went in against Ibeabuchi even after Tua couldn't get rid of him, got wins over the likes of Holyfield etc.

He had balls of steel fighting people like Ibeabuchi, Tua, Wlad, Vitali etc; especially at his size. Such a brave guy, he had absolute confidence in himself.

Yep Byrd didn't avoid anyone. Vitali was ahead. He should of had a rematch tho later.

Vitali destroys any version of Tyson. Tyson sucked. Reigned in the worst era in HW history. Never beat anyone worth mentioning. KTFO by numerous tomato cans.

To be fair, he didn't exactly sit down on his punches against Ike either.

Byrd sometimes sat down on punches. I thought he fought a great fight against Golota despite the draw. That fight was awesome.

He (Byrd) did have a rematch. With Wlad. It probably was in his contract.

No. Vitali's most impressive stat is the fact that he has never been behind on the cards

V.K. tore the hell outta his rotor cuff and was forced to halt after 9 rds... If Byrd thinks he won that fight, well, Allah give praise to him...
