Calzaghe would have destroyed him anyways and I guess the ref knew that, but the stoppage was rediculously premature. If it had been Zab Judah instead of Peter Manfredo than the ref would be dead.

Was the stoppage coming? possibly for sure.

But that was not the right time, way early... embarrassing stoppage in my opinion. He slipped like 12 of 14 Calzaghe punches at the time of the stoppage, he was alert, not hurt, and was defending himself just fine. I don't think It should be the ref's job to judge the fighters "want" to be in the ring. That is for the corner and the fighter, obviously he wanted to be in there at least enough to answer the bell. It is the refs job to keep the fighter safe, and make sure he was defending himself at all times, which he was just fine.

    And I don't hate Calzaghe.

he wasnt exactly being hit by bombs but he wasnt throwing anything back.

should never have been in the ring with Joe anyway, total mismatch.

That was a rather pathetic "onslaught" from Joe, but even worse was the fact that Peter had no idea whatsoever how to react. Any fighter worthy of getting in the ring with Calzaghe would have taken the opportunity to fire back some counter punches.

I think the ref stopped the fight to save the crowd from further embarrasment to be honest.

mandredo was unable to fight back, he was outclassed without any sign of putting up a good fight. so you think the ref should let the fight go on untill he shows signs of having a chance.

At least pic another time to stop the fight, a time when Calzaghe wasn't making him look like a defensively gifted fighter.:yep

Early stoppage, although it would have been stopped eventually.

Yes. The guy wasn't hurt. The fight was a total mismatch, but even if he only had a puncher's chance at winning, he deserved the chance.

Look at it from a neutral point of view, Manfredo got STOPPED and he wasn't hurt at all. He was defending adequately, and although he wasn't mounting any kind of offense, he was in no danger at the time of the stoppage because he was slipping the punches that we're doing little damage even when landed. Why would the ref stop it at that point? What was his reasoning? To save Manfredo? Because he knew Calzaghe was far superior and would eventually win anyway?

I'm not saying the ref was corrupt. Just made a horrible call.

my answer to the question then is manfredo was lucky the ref stoped the fight, he was not good enough to be in the same ring, a couple more rounds and he would of been hit with 80 more punches to his easy target head, why would the ref let that **** go no...
