It's strange that Clev has really emerged since leaving ''Camp Calzaghe''..

I think its probably coincided with Clev maturing naturally. He was a frail looking wiry SOB back then.

Have to wonder just how good Cleverly if camp Calzaghe's reign of triumph over boxing had continued.

He would probably look a little messier, but but throw a ridiculous number of punches, allowing him to beat superiorly skilled opponents.

Probably has to be considered but take Calzaghe out of it and what do you have ??

1 Fighter who considerably over-achieved with a few poor opponents before being put in WAY out of his depth and never reaching the same heights again.

1 Fighter who it seems ridiculous even got a 'World Title' shot let alone winning it, beaten by a fighter a domestic rival outclassed in his first real foray into the weight.

1 Fighter who was simply not that good at all.

1 Fighter who left the gym and has gone on to look 10 times better in doing so ??

Cleverly used to spar with Calzaghe...

Modern fighters must seem like tomato cans to Cleverly after facing off against Joe.

I think Rees and Enzo's little run at world title level actually supports the idea they had a good thing going. They don't look like world class fighters so in reality they overachieved to ever get there.

It is better than people will give it credit for. Bradley Pryce has been in and around British title level for most of his career, Gavin Rees has proven his worth, Gary Lockett had a spell there too. Then you've got the more obvious names of Calzaghe and Maccarinelli. People laughed at Enzo Calzaghe (myself included) when he declared that he would turn Nathan Cleverly into a world champion. It has been very highly succesful.

But you don't have to go back too far to search for competition. Dai Gardiner trained Steve Robinson, Robbie Regan, Johnny Owen, Dazzo Williams amongst others.

    No Joke.........

But the little shed by me - is regarded as one of Wales most successful little gyms.

Colin Jones and Floyd Havard - 2 world title fighters - both associated with the gym and produced by Gareth Bevan who run the gym for over 40 years.

I remeber chatting to Gareth Bevan when I was about 10 years old outside the club - me and my mate - about starting training at the club - but he insisted before he allowed me to do that - I got a letter from my mother.

I didnt think my mother would want me to do boxing training at all - so I left it there.

I trained over there for a bit when I was several years older.

But no question - for such a small little shed - to produce 2 world title challengers was quite a achievement - and I mean in a era - before all these bogus world titles were established - all the WBU and even WBO and all that nonsense - that allow British level fighters to fight for world titles.

No back in them days for the likes of Colin Jones and Floyd Havard - you really had to earn a world title shot - British / Commonwealth / European, etc, etc

Thats the hazard of having bogus World Champions today.

    Smoke and Mirrors.

Which means a British / Euro level fighter can be regarded as world class by some - because of a bogus World title belt wrapped around them.

As a result - they can be thrown into real World title fights - and find themselves totally out of their depth.

Like - before that fight I believe you are referring to - no-one was saying he was out of his depth then - as by most people - even "experts" in the trade like Colin Hart - it was a pick em - 50/50 fight - a clash of World Champions.
