Monzon official record stands at 87 wins, 3 losses and 9 draws. That's quite a few draws there. He lost his 20th fight to Alberto Massi who was 2-0. He had a draw against Andres Selpa who had 118 wins with 42 losses. He had TWO DRAWS in a row with a fighter that was 11-4. He scored a DRAW against Ubaldo Bustos who had 1 win and 4 losses. I wonder how many of those draws were home cooked robberies.
Monzon in his prime.....just beat people up. He acted like he knew he was the Middleweight Champ. Some criticize his contenders, but he beat everybody they put in front of him that was available.
Every time I'd check out Monzon resume, the 9 draws stood out but I never really looked into them until today. I was surprised to see who he had draws with. But I also heard that Monzon was a big party animal and probably wasnt at his best when he suffered said draws.
I rate him number 1 or number 2 at middleweight. He was a superb championship fighter whose opposition is a bit underrated.
If he's rated number one than to me yes .. a top six or seven, without question .. he was a terrific fighter and tough as nails .. I can see him being outpointed by a Jones or a Toney or a Robinson but no one is stopping him and he's a dangerous fight for any of them ..
It’s doubtful that many if any of those draws were “home cooked robberies”. Of the opponents he was held to draw by… - Carlos Alberto Salinas - fellow Argentinian - Juan Aguilar - fellow Argentinian - Ubaldo Marcos Bustos - fellow Argentinian - Emilio Ale Ali - fellow Argentinian - Andres Antonio Selpa - fellow Argentinian - Celedonio Lima - fellow Argentinian The two draws against Manoel Severino were both contested in Brazil. That leaves the first Briscoe encounter; one which caught the usually nonchalant Monzon’s attention (and quite probably played a part in favoring Briscoe for a shot at Monzon’s Championship - Albeit, five years later). I’ve never seen the scoring for this first bout of theirs but, even so, it’s hard to envisage Briscoe having bettered Monzon. I have also heard that there is or used to be a curious Argentine Boxing Rule, requiring a minimum margin of x number of points between the two contestants, lest the bout result in an automatic draw. I’m not sure how true this is, however. Of their title fight in ’72, whilst again taking place in Argentina, I know of none who dispute the result. When you look at Monzon's overall body of work, and watch those fights of his available on tape, it's hard not to be somewhat awed by his sheer quality - in many ways a class of its own.
Maybe Greb, I like Roy Jones, I like James Toney ( very underrated at 160 to me ) , maybe Hagler .. not sure about Ray Robinson who peaked before middleweight but maybe .. maybe a bull like Walker ..
