Monzon was , I repeat, a monster .. I am not saying he was not a top guy in any way .. No one stops him. No one comes out of a fight with him wanting more .. I just think some of the bigger, faster, more athletic guys like Jones, Toney and Hopkins might have outpointed him .. maybe Greb with is speed, stamina and chin .. maybe Robinson but Ray was a greater welter than a middleweight to me ..
In regards to James Toney, let us not forget the nip-and-tuck affair with Johnson, who I thought won.
I never liked Monzon but was a huge Valdez fan. I thought he would beat Monzon whom I felt was an inferior fighter. THEN I watch Carlos completely outclass Valdez twice. Monzon was a beast. Great long punishing jab he controlled everyone with and a steam train right cross that was deadly. He could fight all night...he could box....he could punch. Greatest middleweight in my time. At his best he beats them all.
That is a fair stance to take, but Monzon fought plenty of full- sized middleweights, the idea propagated by Mendozy that he feasted on little guys is a fallacy.
Griffith had beaten Benvenuti,Gutierrez,Bogs ,& Tiger at 160lbs. Ranked during Monzon's reign were: Benvenuti Griffith Bossi Rodriguez Duran Moyer Sterling Bouttier Briscoe Wajima Hart Mundine Watts Monroe Valdez Gutierrez Bogs Was it a bad decade?
Does no one seriously know that Argentina, at the time, would declare a fight a draw is there was anything less than something like a 4 round separation across the board with scoring, hence why almost every Argentinian ever, great or awful, has a large number of draws. It's an odd thing they did for a while, similar to half round scoring in parts of Europe and what not.
Again, Griffith was a 35 year old blown up welterweight. The Benvenuto fights were five years earlier and Tiger was ancient .. Emile would lose more than win the remainder of his fights .. that is that on him .. Not mocking Carlos but this was a weak era.
I didn't .. I feel that he had his most challenging fights against men with speed and the men w speed he fought were old and small .. I feel he would not match up well against the same fighters I keep repeating .. just my thoughts ..
Monzon was a great fighter but I'm not that impressed with him. His resume is full of Argentinian unknowns but he also does have a few good names on the list but not enough to where I'm going to call him the greatest middleweight of all time. He wasn't tested like fighters such as Hagler, Greb, and Robinson.
And exactly how many of his record setting string of defenses were hosted in Argentina? One. And it was a TKO.
I made mention of the scoring rule in Argentina on page 1. Glad both Russell and yourself could confirm it, though.
