Was Carnera at his best when he defended against Uzcudun?

Carnera looks really great to me here.
And honestly, I can't recall him ever looking better.
Paulino does everything a man of his size should do, using head movement, getting under the bigger mans jab, etc. And Primo just handles him. His form and balance look great here, especially for his frame.

Paulino looks physically unimpressive.
But technically very impressive.

His guard, head movement, slick style seems to be appropriate for the opponent.
He looks like hes fighting like Chris Byrd in there.

Do you not understand what you are seeing?
Based on your descriptions, you don't seem to.

Notice how when Carnera launches his straight right, it shoots out with explosive force, while he keeps his weight on the back foot. This is picture perfect technique to throw the straight right. The back knee bends when the foot twists, allowing the weight to remain on the back leg, while the right arm stretches out for the punch.

If you look at many fighters who are less technically proficient, they will shift the weight from the back foot, to the front foot, to get extra range at the expense of their positioning.

Also, he punches while moving to his left. A classic effective technique for staying out of their way while hitting them.

When Carnera steps forward to close the range, he pushes off his back foot, keeping his form, balance, and weight distribution in tact. Excellent form for a hulking giant.

You can see he has very good punch form when he throws his double uppercut.
Right before the bell, he looks to be out of range from Paulino, but connects with a big right hand while staying on the back foot, and then check hooks him while pivoting. The man could box.

 

I can see how one could miss his head movement, as he uses it subtly, and reactively rather than passively.

But how on Earth does one miss his footwork?
