Are you sure it was the 2nd round? I just rewatched it two times but I didn't see the punch from Drummond that you're talking about
Chagaev got hit a few times in that fight and stunned in some, but nothing really serious. I agree all rds were very close and the fight was quite competitive, but Chagaev was ahead, I had Drummond winning only 2 rds at the point of the stoppage. I also agree that Chagaev looked quite poor and ordinary in that fight, not any close to the one that beat Valuev. If he shows up in the same shape against Wlad I believe we will see a KO/TKO inside 6rds.
Chagaev doesn't show much in terms of footwork lately. He also showed a limited offensive arsenal only throwing the traditional 1-2-3, all straight punches.
I wish Wladimir would lead with the right cross followed with a left hook or uppercut. That combination alone with moving to his left will win him the fight. However as it's somewhat technically difficult I'm afraid he'll just throw half a million jabs as always...
He does fight mechanical. In the Austin fight, that left hook of his, the way he mixed up his punches, was a thing of beauty.
Chagaev was a boxer-fighter with the real meaning of the word. A tough guy to handle. I had a very bad feeling before the match with Valuev back in 2007 , and it came true. But since then , he had many health problems. I don't think he is a serious threat to any boxer now. He had many problems with Drummond. Wlad will eliminate him. If the fight reaches the 6th round it will be a miracle . And I think that Valuev would have done the same thing if the fight had taken place .
chagaev is getting KO'D his is a ill man, and is a mismatch against wlad......i still rather see toney-wlad.
You must be a Cotto fan, notice how he's always in position to throw a follow up punch (or two) after all his leads. Now of course Cotto is a converted lefty so some things come natural for him. Like when you're an orthodox fighter throwing the right cross left hook combination requires opening up. This is why Cotto keeps his elbows so wide when he punches - so he can quickly throw a couple of hooks on the same step with his lead punch and then get out. Wladimir doesn't seem to like the idea of having to say too long in mid range, so his combination punching consists almost exclusively of the left jab right cross combo. For him to lead with the right cross against a southpaw would mean that he has to move his left hand away from his chin if he wants to follow up with the left hook. I just don't see him willing to take the risk.
:think I don't remember Wlad ever throwing a right in the fight. Not once! It was as if he tied his right hand behind his back. I agree, those lefts were a thing of beauty tho :deal
What is Chagaev's illness Hepatitis? HIV? Seems rather mysterious to me. And Wlad by KO over Ruslan I agree :good C'mon Young, Toney's old :smoke
Rudolph: you are correct; the punch occured at the 2:36 mark of round three. I have corrected my original post to show this. If anyone wants to see it on youtube, it's at the 9:13 mark of the film, which is "Part 1 of 4" of "Ruslan Chagaev vs. Carl Davis Drummond", posted by FightFranchise. If you play the film in slow motion, you'll see Chagaev looks wobbly for a couple of seconds.
I'm studying Chagaev's films now, trying to get an idea of what will happen on June 20th. I was very impressed with Chagaev's performance against Valuev: Ruslan showed excellent upper body movement, superb footwork, good hand speed, and solid defense. Against Drummond, though, Chagaev showed good hand speed, and nothing else. In this fight he exhibited almost no upper body movement, and he was slow on his feet. Overall, he looked sluggish. I'm convinced Chagaev was stunned at the end of the third round, too.
