And he still would not be able to take a punch or fire back when someone punches with him. Fine china
Fine china? Spinks and Holmes had to beat him half to death to get him to go down and stay down ..maybe not fine China but he's no chavalo either
If you want to see something truly funny and how Cooneys career was really perceived by the public, look up Jim Carrey as Gerry COONEY on "In LIVING COLOR"
Cooney’s biggest mistake in the Holmes fight was not being more aggressive, something he readily acknowledged in later years. He was never going to outbox Holmes and by playing it conservative he played to Holmes’s strengths not his own. For the record I thought he performed admirably in that fight - and was in that fight it was close I disagree with those that feel Holmes was up big. Their is a good copy of the fight on YouTube it was a Good fight. Gerry was under enormous pressure in that fight - as was Holmes- but the ugly racial aspect of it had to weigh on Gerry. Ronald Reagan had a direct line to his office to let him know if Cooney won. That’s not easy to fight with expectations like this, was he overhyped yeah, but he earned it, most casual fans don’t know who the ring top 10 was currently but they know the big names and Gerry absolutely crushed Norton and Lyle. It’s one thing to win, against over the hill fighters it’s another thing to blow them out with first round ko’s Leaving one guy dangling outside the ring and the other guy one or two punches from death. Sure the media hyped him and the Rocky movies were Huge at this time and they painted him as the real life Irish version of Rocky. The media as they are wont to do sell division and hate as do boxing promoters. After this fight I do agree Gerry never put the work in to earn his right to a big payday and he got what he deserved with both the Spinks and Foreman fights. He was looking to springboard one win into millions vs Tyson both times and fell flat on his face. Cherry picks gone bad over more deserving fighters who were putting in real work to earn the good paydays. But he was never the same fighter, he had alcohol and drug abuse issues which plagued many talented fighters from that decade. Cooney from 79-82 was a dangerous fighter with a fragile mental psyche. The Young win is underrated and his best win, Young was in shape for that fight and would win his next 5 bouts earning ring comeback fighter of the year. Look how hyped Wilder is today - he knocks people out and so far has only beaten a very old Ortiz on blood pressure meds and Stiverne. I think beating Young and Norton is better than that and Cooney was 25 Wilder is 33 already. If you knock ppl out you get hyped. It sells
But racism has nothing to do with Cooneys career ? Cooney earned nothing. And he liked the velvet path and today blames others. Bum
That’s fair but let’s not forget Ortiz was busted twice for PEDS and was without them we have no idea how beneficial they were to him at this advanced age. Either way Cooney got job done fast on these “name” opponents. That sells, being white doesn’t hurt either
