    By whom? Exclusively by morons, that's whom. There are manuals in classical pugilism going back at least to the eighteenth century that recommend generally avoiding "curved punches" because of the danger to the knuckles, and one at least even suggests striking with the part of the hand that rests beneath the guard of a saber to minimize this risk.

    There was a guy with a Youtube channel called English Martial Arts, and a little over a year ago he did a whole series on classical pugilism which consisted mostly of him reading aloud directly from primary sources, and in one video he read from a manual, I think written some time around the Napoleonic era, that discussed exactly what Corbett is "credited" with inventing some seventy years later.

    At best you could say Corbett showed how much more useful the hook could now be in the new gloved era.
