pretty tight between him an lawrence cole but maidana got the shaft no point deduction for excesive holding an constantly seperating them with marcos still trying to fight. ill give khan credit for heart an determanation but he definitly had a little bald hof ref in his promoters pocket that was clearly evident

Yea , that's why he allowed for all those rabbit punches with no point deductions or warnings. That's why he didn't warn for Maidana punching on the break , after corTez said stop.. But sure , he was payed off. He just is a shitty ref

Cortez has had some weird performances.

The contrast of what he allowed rgarding holding and infighting in the Hatton-Mayweather and then months later the Calzaghe-Hopkins fight, both times favoring the American fighter, was alarming.

I thought he was deliberately breaking up the fighting in the clinches way too prematurely last night

Cortez just has serious timing issues. He breaks stuff up way to early, but then sometimes gets it spot on. And he jumps in to break things up about a second after calling for it, he needs to give the boxers a second or 2 to break themselves or protect themselves.

Ive seen him referee worse than this but its never good with him.

    That was observation as well.

I think that it did have an impact on the fight, especially in the later rounds as Maidana was trying to get the KO.

It's possible, but I don't want to take away from a great performance by Khan.

I agree. Dirty or not dirty in-fighting is part of the game, and it didn't seem that Cortez wanted to let Maidana work on the inside.

I heard that too but when I came to read threads last night, nobody had really talked about it, so I started my own.

    This.

    True.

I didn't say that the fight was fixed or anything. I just think that he was protecting Khan a bit, knowing that he was chinny and/or that Maidana was a dirty fighter.

he wasnt protecting him but he kept getting in the way as usual, I could see maidana looking at him at one point with a "will you get out of the ****ing way" expression

I'm not the biggest fan of Cortez but to suggest he was protecting Khan is ridiculous and only bitter Maidana fans or biggoted Khan haters would suggest he was.

Maidana got away with all sorts of dirty tactics like hitting on the break, back of the head, elbowing Khan (although deducted a point for elbowing Cortez). Cortez even gave MM the benefit of the doubt when he went down from a slip/punch in the middle rounds.

I Agree he needs to take a step back. Every time cortez is involved the same threads come up. Bottom line he is a **** ref.

No. Maidana was fighting extremely dirty using elbows, punches behind the head, and when Khan would extend his hand to greet Maidana, Maidana the punkbitch instead would throw a cheapshot at him. Maidana gained my respect in one way for his persistence and heart, but lost it for having no honor and having to throw cheapshots because he can't catch his opponent.

Maidana got lucky he didn't get stopped in the first round; Khan got lucky when he gave his back to Maidana and got seperated by Cortez, but if Maidana wouldn't fight so dirty he might of stopped Khan. It wasn't bad as the interference the ref did when Marquez had Juanma ready to get stopped. Now in that one the ref clearly was protecting Juanma, but this fight Cortez had to not so much protect Khan, but warn Maidana for his dirty tactics.
