I was in the room when some guy interviewing Papa Smurf said "Mr Futch, as a boxing expert what is your opinion on " Eddie cut him off & said " Excuse me young man I'm no boxing expert I'm still learning the game" Eddie must have been over 80 yrs old then. What a great guy

Cus, Futch, Moore and Steward are my picks with Moore and Stew being my favourites.

Ray Arcel was in the losing corner for lots of fights against Joe Louis,a trainer can only do so much.

Very true Mac. If you keep coming up against the likes of a prime Louis you'd better have an ATG yourself.

Ray had a good sense of humor about it. The press chided him about and in jest started timing how long it took him to drag his defeated fighter back to the corner.

Arcel eventually won vs Louis when Ezzard Charles defeated him. After all those years he took no joy in that one.

Arcel told a story about one boxer he had that was gonna fight Joe Louis. During camp in the middle of the nignt the guy jumps out of bed and starts to yelll... I'm gonna die!! I'm gonna die!! A full on panic attack.
Arcel had to literally nurse the guy back to sanity. Not exactly a confident camp.

Ray Arcel also trained the Man Of Steel, Tony Zale, Roberto Duran, and for a brief time before his death, Larry Holmes. Eddie Futch was a very knowledgeable trainer, Cus D Amato, Amilcar Brusa, who trained the great Carlos Monzon throughout his entire career, was considered South America's best, he trained 14 world champions, he always got called in for big fights, he was in Tomas Molinares corner in 1988, when he won that freak knockout over Marlon Starling to win the title.
