I ask this because from what I have seen documented Teddy Atlas desperately tried to instill morals and the difference between right and wrong into a young Tyson.
Where-as Cus turned a blind eye to all his wrong doings as long as was winning fights.
This is a definite recipe for disaster and contrary to popular belief, I think if Cus lived longer Tyson may of burnt out sooner.
The fact that Tyson took no ownership of his actions in his formative years is clearly where the mental weakness in the ring was borne from.
Could it well be that Cus ruined Tysons chance of being even better?

This is an interesting argument. I see your point, and I agree that some more discipline would have helped Mike. However, I also think that if Cus had tried to discipline Mike more, Mike would not have reached the heights that he did, as soon as he did. The love that Cus showed him helped to reign him in and I think gave him something/someone to work for. Without Cus as the father figure, and without the goal of being champion, Mike would have self-destructed far sooner. As soon as Mike accomplished the goal, and after Cus died, it was all downhill from there.

I think the lack of Cus D'amato was the ruin of Tyson.

From what I gather he never controlled him - He just used his influence to smooth over trouble he had caused with the police etc..

Cus had him doing the dishes cleaning his room, he turned Mike into a discipinarian.

Cus was very smart without him Mike would of ruined his life in brooklyn.

Cus understood HOW to control Mike, most effectively. Yelling and doing what everyone else did...didnt work. Showing him the positive result of doing it correctly created a visable reward for Tyson.

Tyson was bipolar and had a lot of problems. Cus did as much as he could with him, I mean hell he became linear heavyweight champion of the world didnt he?

I get what people are saying that Cus turned a blind eye to some of Tysons problems but what else could he do Tyson's problems were a mix of psychological and his early childhood.

Not to be smug but is that a serious question? If anyone had a hand in ruining Tyson it was Don King. In addition as somebody already mentioned the addictive personality had to be there to be ruined. Mike ruined Mike.
